Have visited the Pear Tree Café before for coffee and cake, and found out that they did afternoon tea. It is made to order. Four finger sandwiches each included Smoked salmon and cream cheese, Egg mayonnaise and cress, Cheese and pickle and Tuna mayonnaise and cucumber. Cakes included Ginger cake, Caramel shortcake, Lemon cheesecake and a Cherry Bakewell cake. A scone, butter jam and cream completed the sweets. A pot of tea is included. At £16.95 per person it is of average cost but good quality. At least 24 hours notice is required when booking. It is served between 14:00-15:00. We would come again for afternoon tea and would try other things that are on the menu.

Here for breakfast but good to see the full array of cakes on sale for later in the day. Give a table number when ordering at the counter then go for a browse around the garden centre while your breakfast is being cooked then served at your designated table.

Lively cafe in the garden centre. Extensive menu. We opted for coffee and cake which was delicious. Good selection of cakes and reasonable price.

Food pretty much the usual standard for garden centre cafes ie don’t expect too much for your money and you won’t be disappointed. I had a cheese quiche and salad. It was a tiny portion of quiche, most of the plate covered in a boring, undressed, not so fresh salad. Why is a tasty salad so difficult to find in a UK cafe! It just takes some fresh ingredients and a decent dressing on the side. I did ask the person taking the order if the salad was dressed and she just stared unblinkingly into my face with a resolute “no”. Ah well, not to worry. There were always the salad cream or mayo plastic sachets to fall back on. Companion had a lasagne, microwaved to within a rubbery inch of its life. Deserts were somewhat better, a tasty lemon meringue and a moreish Bakewell slice. Accompanied by two soft drinks, the bill came to just over £40. Like I said, pretty much the going rate and standard for garden centre cafes.

What I really didn’t like, and I won’t return because of this, was the presence of several dogs in the cafe. It’s not that I dislike dogs but I don’t like them in areas where food and drink are being consumed. A number of the dogs we encountered were excitable and sniffing around both food and people as they passed by. Unpleasant, and for my companion intimidating. Not everyone likes or feels comfortable around dogs, particularly unknown dogs. Seems a number of food serving establishments are allowing dogs at tables now. We’ll just leave them to it and seek out...

Really disappointed. We visited yesterday at about 10am, we unknowingly sat in the dog friendly area but didn’t mind as the place was really quiet at that time. The table was absolutely filthy and sticky with cake from the day before. I’d already ordered the food to that table so we stayed. I’d have mentioned it to who came with our food (which we waited absolutely ages for) but she just said ‘there’ and plonked the plates on the edge of the table and not even in front of us! The bacon was rock hard and only just edible (I ordered eggs Benedict) the muffin was tiny and stale. I asked for fresh orange and got a bottle of concentrated stuff which wasn’t nice at all. We also didn’t realise and weren’t told the cutlery was elsewhere as was the sugar. Just rubbish (non-existent) customer service. Felt like they didn’t want anyone to be there. Wouldn’t return. Very expensive for...

Just had an awful Lunch at the Pear tree cafe. The hot food on arrival at the table was cold, I complained to the waitress who promptly took the food away. It returned within 5 mins warmed up and almost thrown at us. The waitress was clearly not impressed with us having the audacity to complain about cold food. !!!!

The battered fish was awful, coated in uncooked slimey batter, the chips were like rubber (cooked, gone cold then reheated). My wife had a quiche, chips & salad. She said the same about the chips and that the quiche was one of the worst she had. For £30, it was an expensive charge for a poor quality lunch. I would not recommend the cafe or be returning again. ...
