It's a pub, it's got questionable busy carpet in it, and "we built this city on rock and roll" and other overplayed tack but I wish I hadn't completely written off "The Greyhound" pub in Halton in my quest for a quirky shabby chic cafĂ©. Granted, I didn't try the coffee but the Greyhound succeeded where Red Door CafĂ© failed short: filling up a ravenous tummy. ÂŁ3.95 for this generous DELISH portion of dirty fries, topped with fiery cheese, chipotle sauce, jalapeños and melted cheese. The pub has a beer garden, but why stay in a beer garden when you can cosy up in Colonel Mustard's study? 👌😊

Food certainly wasn't Gastro. Had a 3 course roast Sunday lunch but it all could have been better. Prawn cocktail was ok apart from coming with a cheap slice of white cut bread. Roast potatoes & broccoli were very hard to cut - the first due to leathery tough skin & the 2nd because it was basically raw. The pudding was the best bit & even that was disappointing as it said Sticky Toffee pudding on the menu but it was actually Treacle/Golden Syrup pudding - not the same thing!

The pub was quiet as I visited on a Tuesday lunchtime. Really nice staff member on duty who was friendly, professional and attentive throughout my visit. I ordered the Cumberland Sausage with mash and peas which was A1. The sausage is sourced from a farmer/butcher in Silverdale and was delicious. No mass produced rubbish here! Thanks for your hospitality. My visit was a real pleasure.

Staff here are so unfriendly, wanted to write a review for ages but never got round to it. Used to come here a fair bit before the landlady literally put a disgusted face on and stared my mum out because she was nervous around a dog in the pub and spoke in a different language. It just gave off racist vibes and reading another review other people have been targeted for not being white, doesn’t surprise me. Really can’t imagine anyone other than a white British person going in and feeling comfortable.

In a separate incident walked to the bar and the staff immediately stopped talking and stared me out which was so uncomfortable and one of them just said “what” in a horrible tone that made me feel so uncomfy when I was just ordering a drink?

Last incident was my partner trying to call in at the pub and he didn’t realise it was closed, when he politely asked if it’s closed he got a really snarky yes in response which another disgusted look from the landlady.

All in all the staff just give this attitude of not actually wanting you there, there’s not really any element of professionalism it comes across as a bit of an odd family dynamic as if anyone outside that is not welcome? The response to the previous bad reviews just shows there’s not much professionalism really, you can give an awful attitude but can’t take it back and let’s be honest I don’t know about queer but non white individuals would be passively aggressively stared out 100% here. It’s giving small village racist vibes and honestly the most unwelcoming...

Never going back to this place, when we came in the atmosphere in the pub changed abruptly, and did not make us feel welcome; all of the staff stopped talking, stared at us and didn't respond at first when we asked for the menus. When we did finally order, I asked for a apple crumble pie and made it very clear (I had to repeat it 3 times) that I wanted it before the main course; this was caught with confusion and judgement from the bartender and he asked me 3 times if I was sure I wanted it before my main course.

The wait for the food was in my opinion very long, it took almost 30 minutes from us ordering our food and it coming to us, when the pub itself was empty. The staff were overall very rude and seemed very unprofessional.

People were also allowed to vape inside the business (including bar personnel) which is a health risk for non smokers but also an allergy risk.

When the other person from our party posted a review, the buisiness replied by saying that “when the circus is next in town, find some where else to dine.” Of course, as a queer person of colour the first vibe I got was that there was either a race issue or an issue with us visibly being queer, which in my opinion is absurd. Lancaster has a rich punk and queer history and I honestly expected better than this.

By the way that we were treated, I can safely say that this is not a space where you will be wanted and or safe as a Black and/or queer person...

Bad vibes from the start; walking in first got us a bunch of stares from staff and not much else, didn't seem throughout the visit as if they wanted us there. Starters were forgotten about entirely. Food took incredibly long to come out, and was not exactly bad but mostly flavourless. People were also being allowed to vape inside, which is an allergy concern for us aside from a courtesy thing. It's a pub, the bar doesnt have to be high overall, but this wasn't it.

Edit: the owner has responded describing our presence as "the circus coming to town". This clarifies the unwelcoming treatment we got throughout - two of us are trans and one of us is black. With Lancaster, my home town, being historically queer I expect better of my fellow Lancastrians. Queer residents should demand the same. I did not want to mention our identities or races in the original review as we had no proof of actual discrimination and wouldn't claim that without it. However, whether it was queerphobia, racism or both, the owner has now outed themselves for us instead.

To their first point, our intentions for dessert first were only based on preference and not on somehow making things hard for kitchen staff, as we are all former restaurant staffers. We came in for a meal; we were served bigotry and now, in response, excuses for not caring to be better. Ban us; we'll...
