We organised to come here after my dad had previously popped in for drinks and said their food looked nice, so we booked! First impressions were very friendly, polite staff, easy to book and adjust our booking time too. They added some decorations after I left a booking note regarding a birthday which was a lovely touch!
After sitting down service was quick and easy, we got our drinks and the waitress handed them to us by handling them from above the drink which as a couple of us worked in restaurants we knew was the wrong way to do, as you’re not meant to touch where the guest drinks from, but the girl who served us looked clean and we aren’t that petty to return drinks over that! She was a nice waitress, just was an odd way of handling drinks.
We got our starters and they were brilliant, absolutely no faults with any of them. We had a good selection too.
4 of the 5 of us ordered from the grill for mains and unfortunately we were super disappointed. If you’ve ever bbq’d on a dirty bbq and found that sooty burnt taste all over your meat, that’s what we had. It was a shame as the steak quality wasn’t great, they were cooked correctly but because of the taste of the burnt bbq bits all over the meat it ruined the whole steaks. The other person had cod and chips and was lovely! No issues at all. Our fries and sides were tasty too, our waitress noticed how much was left with the steaks and asked us so we explained, offered replacements or new meals, but we were ok and full enough from other bits and decided we’d just move onto desserts. They then came back and had removed all the steaks from the bill which we didn’t expect but was very nice of them to do. Desserts again were completely lovely, two had iced cream sundaes and they were great, one had a brownie which was ok but quite tough, a bit valet rather than a brownie. Not 100% on it and personally wouldn’t get that again. All in all, if we were stopping for a drink and a light bite we’d go here for starters and drinks, but we wouldn’t return for a meal again nor recommend it as a place for visitors and friends. There’s better options for a full meal around, but the staff here are lovely, professional and polite, can’t fault any of that. The grill just needs a...
Read moreI had high hopes for a relaxed Sunday lunch at the Flying Childers Pub, but unfortunately, the experience was quite disappointing. To begin with, the kitchen had run out of both beef and pork for their Sunday roasts, leaving turkey as the only available option. It’s understandable for some items to run low later in the day, but this was during a Sunday service, which is prime time for roast dinners. On top of that, the meals that did arrive were inconsistent – some people at our table received different types of vegetables and gravy, despite ordering the same dish. It made the dining experience feel quite chaotic and unorganised. The dessert situation was just as disappointing. We ordered a fruit salad, but what arrived was simply a bowl of strawberries. Apparently, the kitchen had run out of other fruit, which seemed like poor planning for a weekend service.
The service was, frankly, unbelievably slow. Despite being seated right next to where the waitstaff were stationed, they were more interested in chatting among themselves than actually attending to customers. We had to wait an excessive amount of time to place our order, and getting the bill at the end was a hassle in itself.
As for the food, it was average at best. We ordered a steak medium rare, but it arrived overcooked. The Sunday roast also suffered from a lack of seasoning, making it quite bland. The house special burger, which we were looking forward to trying, was disappointing as well – the burger patty was dry and lacked juiciness.
All in all, the experience fell far short of expectations. While the pub has a nice atmosphere, the combination of slow service, poorly prepared food, and the kitchen running out of key ingredients made it a far cry from the enjoyable Sunday lunch we were hoping for. It wasn’t terrible, but a bill greater that £150 I’d be hard-pressed to...
Read moreVery disappointed with tonight’s meal. I ordered a medium rare steak for it to come out still mooing. Followed by no check back during the entire meal leaving me and my partner without a drink for the whole meal and myself eating just chips for my dinner as I could not ask for the steak to be cooked some more. When the lady came to clear the table (15 minutes after we had finished and around 6 glances at the table by her and the other lady.. clearing avoiding clearing my table as they could see the full steak on it!!) she asked if everything was okay? I explained it was not as the steak was basically blue and there was no check back (anyone asking how the meal is/if we need anything) so I could not ask for drinks or for my steak to be cooked for longer. To which she replied ‘you should’ve got one of our attentions for us to sort it’ … you think I don’t try? However I have worked in pubs and restaurants and am not a person to sit shouting and being rude to get your attention. She told me ‘she would speak to the manager to see what they could do’ I asked to speak to the manager and she said no she would. They came back and said they have taken off the cost of the steak… thanks?? What about the fact the service was horrendous and my monthly date night with my husband got ruined and I’m going home hungry!! When I then went to pay the bill. The waitress was whispering to the manager by the coffee machine behind the bar (clearly about me, let’s be more subtle guys) the manager then looked at me and walked off!! Leaving the waitress to serve me! You have now lost a local loyal customer, due to the fact you couldn’t...
