Went for Sunday Lunch, food was delicious but unfortunately that didn't make up for the appalling service we recieved.

One waitress looked happy to serve us, the other 3 how ever didn't. We asked for a smaller portion after being refused a child's, we still recieved the same size portion. We asked for sauces which camea15 minutes later, when our dinners were almost gone and we'd had to ask a 2nd time.

Waited almost half an hour after finishing our dinner for the dessert menus before we decided to retrieve them ourselves. Given that the prices are the same for one or two courses on a Sunday we asked to take some portions of desserts home, the lady at the bar was very rude and almost made me feel wrong for asking. After an eye brow raise and a side eye roll she came back from the kitchen to tell me that it was fine. 3 lovely portions of the finest Vanilla cheese cake brought to the table along with the bill.

Had to go to the bar to pay the bill as we'd already waited 15 minutes and weren't prepared to wait longer, and needless to say we did not want to leave a tip, the same, rude and unhappy lady served me, I put my hand out for the change and she placed it next to my hand on the bar top. How rude! The icing on the cake for me during my very disappointing visit today.

We won't be returning, and neither will the friends of ours who were sat on a different table at the other side of the room and had a similar experience!!

Staff need training and in my opinion some need the sack! You can teach them what's expected of them but manners and common courtesy is something people are brought up with. You can't train somebody to want to be somewhere, so that's half of the waitressed untrainable too.

I wanted to speak to a waitress about our experience today but no waitresses approached us without prompting for the last 40 minutes - 1 hour of out visit. The lady at the bar was less than approachable, I dread to think her response if somebody confronted her about her ill manners and poor front of house skills.

What a real shame for somewhere that serves such beautiful and well...

Went last night for my daughters birthday. Got there at 8.30 for when our table was booked but it wasn't ready. We were asked to wait at the bar where it was cramped and the literal walk way. Its like instead of having a bar waiting area they have crammed table upon table. Ordered food which came in a reasonable time but it was not great. Avoid the garlic mushrooms they were basically cream and mushrooms minus the garlic, definitely Avoid the lasagne it was vile completely inedible tasted of sour vinegar. Burgers were dry and tasteless. First time in years we went but would not go back. The staff were ok but were completely rushed off their feet. Too many bookings not enough care about product or service. Edited..response to owner. Only once were we asked about our meals and we didnt complain because the staff were rushed off their feet and as it was late we didnt see any point in sending anything back. As for being rude this is a blatant lie on your establishments part as not once did we complain or rudely speak to your staff who were quite frankly run ragged so this is your way of making our party out to be the problem. As for the waiting it would have been fine to wait those 10 minutes if we had an adequate space and not having to keep squashing together to let your staff past. The food might be popular but it was not good and i have lasagne myself at most venues. We dealt with with 3 different staff members 1 at the bar and 2 different waitresses and they were all professionall unlike with this response the management. Maybe look at the problems stated instead of being dissmissive and lying to try to make the review...

The service from the manager received by another member of our party who had allergies was rude and unhelpful. Despite the customer calling ahead and being reassured there would be suitable options on the day this was not the case. Eventually after several back and forwards between them they were informed someone from the kitchen could either go to a shop to get an alternative, the chef could make a special reduction, but that this option would mean the table having to wait even longer for the mains. They never received an apology despite having called ahead twice before the meal. The allergen book was also wrong. This was their birthday meal and meant to be a nice lunch out with friends. For myself my roast was mediocre at most. The chipolata was laughable it was the size of a malteaser, no stuffing (with turkey) 1 carrot 3 potatoes that tasted like they had been left over from a few days before. The cauliflower cheese tasted nice but for 4 pounds I would have expected slightly more. Yorkshire was dark brown in colour and the Gravy had no taste. Prawn cocktail for starter was lovely though so wasn't all doom and gloom. When comparing to other roasts in the newport and surrounding areas there are other venues with far better options, quality and taste wise. Our server was really pleasant and polite shame it was already ruined by the...

We booked Sunday Lunch because The Rock and Fountain Inn was listed as one of the three places in Wales on the UK's most beloved brunches and Sunday lunches list (OpenTable). We were not disappointed. The buildings exterior and car park are not the simplest layout in the world. However, only a minor barrier (and not much they can do anything about). We were welcomed warmly and invited to have a drink at the bar while our table was prepared. It's lighter and brighter than I expected considering the age of the buildings. We got lucky with a window seat. Not quite the hanging gardens of Babylon as a view, but countryside, so pleasant. A good selection on offer. I had a very lovely carrot and tarragon soup. My companion had garlic mushrooms which did the trick nicely. We both had lamb... nice but maybe not really special. However, the rest of the lunch was. The roast potatoes were excellent. I'll go back for them alone! Roasted with garlic and herbs for a real flavour. The (ubiquitous enormous) Yorkshire pudding, heritage carrots, cabbage, peas... mmmm. The all-important gravy? Very tasty and plenty, too (without having to ask). Too full for dessert, but other people's looked nice. Yep, we'll be back. Roast beef or maybe turkey, next time, but already looking forward to it!

Food and ambience excellent. But! Please, Please, Please don't spoil the a meal of such quality and professionalism with frozen chips. They are an insult to taste and quality of such well presented beautifully tasting meals. Please don't follow the likes of some restaurants who use these potatoe imposters of chips to ruin there meals. Real chips are so much better and show a extra level of detail and food perfection a restaurants chef and kitchen team👍 My local chippy serves real chips why can't a professional kitchen? Please don't let yourselves down👍

We were celebrating a fiftieth birthday and were seated in the Library which is a room set off the top of the stairs, a perfect venue for an intimate atmosphere. The staff were attentive without being intrusive. The food was absolutely delicious I recommend chefs beef pie and berry cheesecake. Towards the end of the evening the premises suffered a power outage, staff brought candles and combined with emergency lighting this enhanced the atmosphere. Congratulations to the team for the way the dealt with this minor issue.
