I feel awful giving anything less than 5 stars but this is my honest opinion. Pre fire we absolutely loved Ajs for a family meal. It was our go to spot and everyone always enjoyed it, looked forward to going back. Unfortunately im not left with the same feeling, having visited twice since their reopening. The first visit back, I ordered Scampi. It is not battered (which i prefer) the coating was very crispy and fish left a lot to be desired. I also did find a live snail in my peas on my plate. We did tell the waitress who was just as shocked as us and they did take that meal off the bill and offered free deserts (which was too generous in my opinion, id have been happy with a fresh meal, which actually wasnt offered) But it was sorted, no big deal as these things can happen when working with fresh veg ect. Our second visit was better. The staff were friendly and could always get someone's attention if we needed it. I had a chowder which was lovely. A few people at our table ordered salads. One of which has intolerances to spices of any kind. When both salads came, the meat on both had been covered with an orange powder. We asked what it was and im sure it was Cayenne? Unfortunately they had to be sent back and ask for no spices due to the intolerances. It was sorted quickly enough without any hassle and the rest of the table seemed to enjoy their meal. The steak was especially beautiful. For dessert some us of had kinder bueno cheesecake. It tasted sour and nothing like kinder.
Im glad to see Ajs back and I hope it makes it's way back to what it used to be. Just hearty meals with no bells and whistles.
Im sure we will be back and I do reccomend here unfortunately this seemed to have just been...
Read moreI went in to have breakfast with my boyfriend as we loved to go in on a Sunday and this is our first time back in a few months. My boyfriend ordered a hot chocolate, now I’m not sure if you put it in as latte but it didn’t taste like hot chocolate or a latte. Unfortunately it was half filled with foam, my boyfriend didn’t want to say anything so we waited until we had to go and pay. The employees didn’t ask if everything was okay for me to say that the drink was half filled with foam but just said the price and took my boyfriends card. I said after she took it that the drink was half filled with foam. She turned to another employee as she said “she just told me that the latte was half filled with foam after I cashed it off” sorry but you didn’t give me the chance to say beforehand. Then the other woman just handed me the money and said here. I got no apology and I wasn’t going to pay full price for a drink that I only got half of it for. So I won’t be back if that’s how the...
Read moreI have only been to AJ's a few times before, but went with my family in a party of 8 (who go regularly). Got seated quickly and I ordered the roast beef dinner from the specials menu. Others got the bookmaker sandwich, one the Pills sandwich, baked potato, burger...The first issue noticed was the absence of the milkshake which had to be requested 3 times before it arrived ( by which time I had almost finished my meal) which was equally disappointing in that it was a pitiful size, hadn't even got a roast potato (for a roast) and had at least 2 hairs in it. I ate it anyway as I'm not really a stickler and vote with my feet. The final insult was that when the bill was questioned over £1 because there was no cheese in the Pills sandwich (only difference from the bookmaker), the (I assume) manager lady as much as called us liars (we didn't even raise any other issues). In summary AJ's seems like a poorly run cafe which charges restraunt prices. I...
