Herrons Country Fried Chicken Kilkeel — Restaurant in Newry, Mourne and Down District Council

Extremely irregular quality. Used to be great, way better than KFC. Then got new ownership; apparently recipe and cooking instructions weren't part of the deal. Ordered from them a few months ago; no idea how you manage to overcook fried chicken closer to the bone while leaving outside soggy. Gave another shot last week; much improved although the outside was crispy & the meat there nice & moist still overlooked, mysteriously near the bone. But if new owners discover other seasonings than salt (was oversalted for me; but most people use a lot of salt in everything which makes it harder to taste salt, so probably ok by most people's taste) but if they figure out other things exist to season fried chicken (like thyme) & get cooking times down a bit better, then they'll be a welcome addition indeed to Kilkeel. 3 stars because they improved quite a bit since first try since ownership change and a lot of improvement in relatively short time. Can just drop in; which is nice, and husband said service was pretty good and was prompt. We went here while on holiday, chicken is OK skin not crispy but sloppy very greasy, very slow service seems to me they can only do 1 order at a time, even though there are plenty of staff on, but they are just standing talking and staring at the customer's, but they don't actually take your order. Very rude staff. A man ordered before us while there was two staff at the till and another at the back of the kitchen. When we went up to order and said hello, the two women at the till ignored us and walked off. We waited a few minutes to see if they were going to come back to the till to take our order but they didn't so we left. Maybe they're incapable of completing more than one order at a time.
