Fantastic village pub in the heart of Devon! Well worth the drive down for a lunch, dinner or Sunday roast. We started with the pate, which was the best I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. Next the Scotch Egg which is one of their specialities and it didn’t disappoint, with just the right amount of spice. Finally we had a classic Sticky Toffee Pudding, something I’d been waiting to indulge in since I arrived in England and it was just as good as I imaged it would be. The landlord, a really pleasant fella, has more cider on hand than any other pub I’d been too and expertly guided me on creating a cider to my liking. I had an elderflower cider mixed with a dry still cider so it wasn’t too sweet. After that I had him just make me a cider up using a combination of the ciders he had on hand. Certainly two of the best ciders I’ve had in Somerset / Devon area. I enjoyed the still cider’s as I was getting sick of the bubbly ones other places usually have. The pub itself is one of the most beautiful and cosy pubs I’ve been to in the UK and upon entering you’re transported back to the time of old and can image people sitting here drinking ale and swapping farming stories for centuries gone by. Lastly, and most importantly to some, the pub is quite reasonably priced and you’ll leave feeling you got a great value for what was presented before you. Thanks for the great visit and I look forward to coming again on my next visit to England!

My friend and I booked a table late in the afternoon but they managed to find a place for us at 8.30. It's a very rural place, but worth the trip. The staff are very very friendly and welcoming and the bar and restaurant are great. I had sausage and mash which I haven't had for years and I have to say, it's the best sausage and mash I've had... ever. My friend had the Thai curry with prawns and she was very impressed too. I honestly wish I could go back but we're only here for the weekend. Absolutely fantastic place, but book in advance.

First time visitors this evening and we'll definitely be back... Took our Nanna for her first steak dinner since moving to South Molton from the Midlands and it was the most I've ever seen her eat! The whitebait starter was tasty and generous, the haggis scotch egg with whisky mayo was perfect (if I wasn't driving I might have added a little more whisky!) And we both enjoyed the red Thai curry. Great food and a lovely atmosphere. Very welcoming and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

To start off we had booked a table for 1230,but turned up at the pub,and they had given the table to another group, which to me is very poor customer service, and no real apology, after 5/10 minutes they arranged a table for us,even though only 5 tables in dinning area, a table that came in after us were given menu's before us,another table had their food served but no cutlery on the table, most of the group had lamb or beef roasts,£15 each, felt the portion sizes wasn't great, the same for the amount of vegetables, the Yorkshire puddings weren't crispy, more like a muffin, plus we all agree that gravy shouldn't be pre poured on to dinner's, it should come separately in a jug, the quality of food was ok,but I feel much better places for a Sunday roast in the area and for the price, especially as we live in North Devon, shame as the pub it's self feels like a traditional village pub ,but felt alittle let down by the food. I feel sorry for the semi negative review, but that's how all...

The welcome was a warm one and pub was comfortable we called last week to be told it was fully booked and offered a alternative pub the castle unfortunately it was closed so on the spot I booked for this week for Sunday lunch and was really looking forward to sitting down and tucking in to a traditional roast I will start with the good bite the roast potatoes excellent The veg where cold red cabbage vinegar/sweet bleeding into the brown coloured swede and the cold carrots not keen on the machine sliced beef look maybe wrong may have a chef that can slice beef exactly the same all the time the Yorkshire pudding sorry grim made with Guinness and a brown colour inside like hobos loaf don’t mess with the basics. If anyone can recommend a quality places for Sunday lunch I would...
