Tries hard to be a gastro pub, failed on this occasion. Starters, squid was done to perfection, albeit a little powdery after taste due to the flour in the batter. The whipped goat cheese was hard and felt beaten, not whipped, light and fluffy, and plopped on the plate. There was nothing acidic on the plate to balance the overwhelmingly sweet balsamic, pear, and beetroot. Not balanced at all, which was a shame. Mains, the lamb was well cooked and delicious, although like all of the food we ate, it was not seasoned. The pork belly and scallops. Scallopes were cooked perfectly if a little cold. The pork belly was 90% fat and 10% meat (see attached picture), a Chef should look at what they are serving and understand the ratios of fat to meat! The issue was with the potatoes. They were cold, as was the tender stem broccoli. My 30 years as a Chef tells me that the my plate was on the pass waiting for the pork for so long that everything had cooled down by the time the meat was heated up, I returned the cold potato's, the server apologised and returned with blaclened mega hot potato's, but the little pan of sauce that went back with the dish was cold at this point. I really didn't want to wait to send it back again as we were celebrating our birthdays, and my wife had stopped eating to wait for my food to come back, so I left the sauce and ate my lump of fat and white hot potato's, cold brocoli and random meat ball. Overall, I was disappointed with the visit. Staff were pleasant, but the food is definitely not worth the price tag for what it is, just pub grub that should be better. You have to get the basics right look at what you are giving someone to eat, season it, and serve it hot! we are not just another customer. We expect what you describe on the menu. Everyone knows you don't cook potatoes to order, but you need to serve it hot. Are you temp probing your food to ensure it's hot!! Would have liked to put it on my list of go-to good food pubs. I may have to give it a while before i visit again. Shame,...

The Mossbrook had been recently refurbished so we decided to book a Valentines Dinner there and see what their new offering was like. I have always like the location of the pub/restaurant and liked their outside seating area in summer unfortunately their food was always average and overpriced and the service was poor. First impression of the refurbishment was good and quite stylish. We had a drink at the bar area before being seated for our dinner. Neither the bar staff and reception staff offered any type of welcome or Valentines greeting. We were left waiting while the staff located our table. When we were finally seated at the table we were stuck near the kitchen door, the candle on the table didn’t work and we were seated at the side of each other rather across from each other. They hardly created any type of romantic Valentines experience. The service overall was slow and the staff seem distracted & did not give their personal attention. During the meal the wine was poured by the waitress more of a after thought with no napkin so the ice warm dripped all over the place.

It was good to note the food on the night was much improved but l would still not class the Mossbrook as a Gastro Pub although l suspect that is their aspiration, looking at the pricing of the ‘Mossbrook Experience’

In summary the refurb has been well done at The Mossbrook but the service has not improved and there is no front of house personality to provide a welcome. The food is getting there but there is still a question mark regarding is it value for money or different enough to charge extra ? Having spent a sizeable budget on their refurbishment it would be reasonable to expect a big uplift in standards before like most average restaurants they slip back. The uplift is not eye catching at The Mossbrook and l fear that it will soon fall back into mediocrity unless the current owners take action. I hope they do because there is a tremendous opportunity in the area for a...

I had spoken and discussed the stay from booking , through confirmation of orders with you on several occasions before the visit and your interactions were all friendly, helpful and accommodating. You even phoned to confirm times when I inadvertently put 16:30 rather than 16:00 and I was able to update you re 1x cancellation. Again a really helpful call . You agreed I could drop our joint birthday cake off earlier on the day and that took a little more pressure off, of me. On arrival you identified my cousin and I and led us to the dining room and once seated very efficiently served all 32 of us quickly and efficiently despite us having ordered off, of different menus. As well as those of us that had also had the additional festive drinks included. There was just the right time between courses and I was exceptionally pleased with how well you did things, the food was delicious but for me that was topped on the day by how great you and your people were! Even down to bringing my cousin and I to a central spot and bringing the cake in having added candles ( that I just hadn’t thought about) Again when we all came to pay in individual families you were kind, friendly and patient. Even to putting some tables together for us in the bar afterwards so family that had come from across the country could chat in comfort. So all in all, what a fabulous group of people you have working together. I can’t say enough about our visit and the quality of the food served. You couldn’t have done any more to be helpful or accommodating, Thank you , you really did add shine to our...

Me and my son booked a table for Sunday lunch (as a super rare treat!), we spent a lovely afternoon working up an appetite walking the dog in Eckington woods - so when we arrived in our outdoor gear we felt a little out of place. I was disappointed that when we arrived and I explained I had booked a table the manager just pointed to a free table and didn’t even give us a menu. My son had to go and find us one, despite everyone else being warmly greeted and shown to their table with menus. Anyways, it was busy and the staff seemed quite stressed. We went ahead and ordered at the bar. I had the chicken roast and my not-so-little 11 year old ordered the dirty burger. He said it was the best burger he’s ever had! 10 out 10, and the kid has had a lot of burgers in his time! The roast was tasty, but I was a bit disappointed in the roasties because they looked amaaazing but were clearly old & tasted like they had been reheated in the microwave. They looked like such good roasties too, but the crisp was no longer crisp and more chewy like what you get when you’ve fridged and reheated a roastie. I wouldn’t mind but for the price of the roast I expected they would have been fresh on the day. Other than that, it was lovely! Yorkshire was super tasty! I would have mentioned this to a member of staff but after being served our food nobody came back to check on us anyways. Would definitely come back to try a burger myself as my son polished the whole plate!

We booked the Mossbrook for an evening meal on our wedding anniversary. When we arrived (on time) it took a little while for us to be taken to our seat. The atmosphere was quite relaxed with a mix of family and adult only tables. The decor is light and vibrant, we did not use the facilities during our visit. We were able to take advantage of the 2 for (reduced price) mocktails - ordering a elderflower sherbet and a colado breeze. Both were well presented and very tasty. We each had 3 courses, sharing a baked camembert with toasted bread and chilli jam for starter. For our mains my wife had the seafood linguini and I had the roast half-chicken with a side of green veg. The final course was the chocolate bomb for myself and decaf tea and mini-crumble for my wife. All the food was well made, decent portions and of a quality expected for the price. My only disappointment was the chocolate pudding sauce was clearly not hot enough to melt the chocolate 'shell'. Whilst the staff were all friendly and able to answer any questions service was quite slow with the 3rd course only being served about 2 hours after initial booking time.
