We arrived on a cold rainy day, and it felt like summer had finally come to an end, so we wanted to visit a pub with a roaring fire and a cosy atmosphere. We really hit the jackpot with The Fox & Goose! We initially planned to just stay for a drink and nurse that for an hour while warming ourselves by the fire, but as we loved the place so much we stayed for another, and then dinner too! The decor is quintessential British countryside pub, with it's low beamed ceilings, old photographs of the area, and other decorations of a time now passed, if it wasn't for the TV in the corner and speakers playing music you may have thought you'd stepped back in time. Both the staff and locals were very friendly and easy to chat to, which always makes the experience that much better. But the food, now I knew it would be good, but it was more than that, it was probably one of the best meals I have had this year. I had the steak and ale pie, which was served with a choice of mash or roast potatoes (I chose mash) and roasted vegetables, and gravy. Everything was perfect, and I wouldn't be able to say that anything could be done better. The steak and ale pie was full with filling too! My partner had the mussels which were the catch of the week and these were good too as I may have pinched a couple. As we come to Derbyshire yearly, this will be one place we definitely will be back to.

What can I say, apart from a huge thank you. You made my wedding!!! Firstly, Your venue is just so lovely, it is not over fussy. Its just down to earth, friendly and really represents a lovely cosy Derbyshire pub. Except its more than a pub, we had total control of how we wished to decorate, with your light and a bit of extra bunting we turned into into a sparkly, beautiful wedding venue of my dreams. The views are spectacular and we had so much room for everyone, it really catered for everyones needs. Now the food, ... Absolutely delicious. The wedding breakfast was so yummy, we had to the ham hock, beef and the chocolate tart which has got to be one of the tastiest deserts I have ever had. The hog roast was fantastic too, everyone loved that and thank you for providing veggie options. Now the people, thank you Lynne. You worked so hard to make sure it was perfect for me. You are so lovely, easy to contact and just made it feel so relaxed. Everything went so smoothly, not a single hiccup in the day or evening, just thank you. Craig, thank you too, your staff and venue made you proud. I had soooo many compliments from everyone, thank you for being so relaxed and generous. I would recommend this place to anyone, and I will certainly be back in the future for some fantastic food. So much Love, Emily and Phill

Disappointing I am afraid. My wife and I turned up at just gone 12, thinking it would be quiet. There were no staff to be found when we walked in and a couple sitting at the table. We asked them if it was open. After a few minutes the manager I assume walked in and said hello. He then proceeded to go behind the bar and answer the phone and then stood there. I had to ask him would it be possible to get a table for two and he said yes of course. I briefly looked around, it was not clear if it was tableservice or pay at the bar. I asked him how does it work? He laughed obnoxiously and said “well you find a table and you sit down”. I then asked do we pay at the bar or is it table-service and where are the menus? To which he replied, I will get you a menu. We ordered bruschetta for starter and fish and chips for main. The bruschetta was very small and bland tasting. The fish and chips, the fish was beautiful. However, the chips were soggy and some borderline burnt. They never checked on us to see if the food was alright, they never asked if we wanted to refill our drinks. For supposedly table service it was poor. Staff were hanging around at the bar. The kitchen staff were coming in and pouring themselves a drink. So in general, we did not feel it gave a good impression.

Absolutely Shocking Experience – Ruined a Special Occasion

We booked this restaurant for my mother and father-in-law’s silver anniversary, expecting a smooth and enjoyable evening for such a special occasion. Instead, it turned into an incredibly frustrating and disappointing night.

From the moment we arrived, the service was disorganised and chaotic. We were messed around multiple times and not once did anyone inform us that several menu items were unavailable — this was only mentioned after we had sat down and attempted to place our orders.

After waiting 45 minutes, we were then told there were “issues” with the meals we had chosen and that we needed to make alterations — again, no explanation and no real apology. We reluctantly changed our orders, only for the food to arrive 1 hour and 10 minutes after we had first ordered — and even then, it was incorrect. The meal came with something completely different to what was agreed.

The lack of communication and basic customer service was appalling throughout. Staff seemed unbothered, and no one took any real responsibility for the poor experience.

To make matters worse, the owner came over at the end, clearly trying to gloss over the situation by offering free desserts — which we didn’t want and didn’t ask for. Instead of offering a real alternative or some genuine apology, we were pressured into accepting something just for show. That’s not how you handle dissatisfied guests, especially on an occasion as important as this.

All in all, the evening was ruined. We left feeling frustrated, embarrassed, and completely let down. Would absolutely not recommend — especially not for a...

My wife and I visited this lovely clean Inn for my birthday treat organised by my daughter and Lynn the manager. The table was booked for 6.30.On arriving it was very quiet but of course it was quite early evening. The lady behind the bar gave us a lovely greeting served us drinks and the gave us the option of seating, as it was quite a cold evening we chose to sit near the wood burning fire. We indicated that we were ready to order, Lynn presented us with the menu and we both selected the Lamb trio. Lamb fritter, a miniture pan of shepards pie and lamb joint. We didn't have to wait very long before the food arrived my goodness the plate looked delightful, complete with 2 large pieces of lamb joint carrots, green beans and luscious gravy. I have to say that this was one of the finest meals I have had the pleasure of eating in many years. The lamb was cooked to perfection and slightly pink, the shepherds pie tasted beautiful and even a simple fritter tasted very special. In addition to having a fabulous meal perfectly cooked the Manager Lynn could not have been more helpful, checking to see if everything was ok, a real professional in the true meaning of the word. We live in Derby about 40 minutes away but I would definately make my way to the Fox & Goose should we be in that area. Highly recommended. A big thank you to Lynn for helping my daughter to arrange this surprise and to the chef for making my birthday...
