Spending a rainy day watching the seals at Horsey we were looking for a place to eat a Sunday roast. The Nelson's head is down a small quiet road off a bend on the main road. Easily found as it is well sign posted on that bend. This is a small local pub with seating enough for around 26 people ordering food and 4 people at the bar. Seating consists of 2x tables for 8, 2x tables for 4 people and 1 table for couple. All tables are wood only with no padding but still comfortable. Interior decoration has a heavy farm feel with tack items, old scythes, guns etc.. A coal fire burns at 1 end of the room for heating. Unusually this pub is dog friendly so you can bring your dogs but it seems the dog owners only bring the dogs to the bar area, not around the tables. Car parking at the rear. The Sunday roast was priced at £11.95 per person. 2 of our roasts were requested with no meat as there were 2 vegetarians. We were given a discount on the meal price for the meatless food even though it was not requested or expected. There is no vegetarian alternative to the meal but it would be nice if they had some vegetarian sausages or veggie pies that they could substitute the meat with. The roast was, we all thought, very nice! All vegetables came out well cooked and the potatoes had a lovely roasted rosemary coating. Being out in the country I would hazard a guess at all veg is locally produced, fresh and probably organic! The gravy was a little watery for our familys pallet but still nice and it didn't ruin the meal, the thickness of a gravy is obviously a personal preference. A nice selection of ciders available, mostly different ciders from the local farmers but a few of you will know. Unfortunately we live a way from here but we would love to try some of the other food because of the standard of the roast! Service was friendly helpful and polite. If you are a bit peckish after a cold day watching the seals at Horsey this place is worth a try!!

The Nelson Head in Horsey is a cracking pub for a drink. Tucked away on the Norfolk coast, it’s got bags of charm, a roaring fire in winter, and the sort of atmosphere that makes you want to settle in with a pint and never leave. The drinks are spot on, the ales are well kept, and the staff are as friendly as you could wish for – quick with service, chat, and a smile. But here’s the catch: the food hygiene rating. At the time of writing, it’s a big fat zero. Yes, zero. As in, the sort of score that makes you suddenly appreciate packet crisps as haute cuisine. So while the pub itself is brilliant for a drink or three, eating here is less “pub lunch” and more “culinary Russian Roulette.” You might be fine. You might also find yourself on first-name terms with the loo. So the verdict? A gem of a place for drinks, atmosphere, and friendliness, but until the hygiene score is sorted, stick to the beers. Five stars for the pints, minus several nervous gulps for the kitchen.

This used to be an amazing pub, in fact it was an influencing factor in booking our holiday to this part of Norfolk. Sadly the staff - one who states "I am leaving soon, I don't care," are runing this place. The sooner those staff leave the better! The guy behind the bar said "I'm just a student, off to Uni in September so I don't care either." The landlord, was never available and according to staff "only turns up to lock up." Such a shame as this was such a great place. One evening whilst we were there with our young daughter some customers ordered a chocolate brownie for a desert, knowing my daughter was bored I asked her if she would like one, to which her eyes lit up and she gleefully said "yes, please!" I asked if we could also order one and we were told "No, under NO circumstances, the last orders are 8:30 for food and it's 8:35!" At first we thought it was a joke, but no they were SERIOUS! I asked them to ask chef and explain it was for a child and they said they would ask but that chef would refuse! He did! Whilst they were out the back speaking to "chef" the customer who ordered the one agreed to charge his order to two and we would have the second. When the customer asked to be allowed to change his order to two he was also REFUSED. Our young daughter had to sit and watch others being given the exact same food she was denied. We tried to make a joke of it, but we were advised by the staff "We are under strict orders by the landlord, he instructs us to BE RUDE AND OFFENSIVE." Strangely enough we didn't return for the rest of our holiday and didn't eat there as although the food is delicious it is a bit pricey and we quite happily drove the extra distance to a pub where the food was excellent and the service was outstanding too. The great thing is one member of staff is off to uni so will be leaving, the other, his family are moving so he will be leaving too. They are advertising for a new chef, so within a few months these guys who are hell bent on destroying the business "because they feel aggrieved the landlord isn't there" will all soon be left - not a...

What happened??? 😭 This feels like punching an old friend and something I never thought I'd do as we've been here so many times over the years and had amazing meals, so we were greatly looking forward to one for my birthday Son and I were craving some of the steak with stilton and mushroom sauce that we'd not had in a couple of years (oh boy was that GOOD), but we sit with menus to see they don't do steak anymore (nor much that used to be on the menu unfortunately) Very generic pub food, didn't fancy much but decided on garlic mushrooms as a starter, and spaghetti Bolognese from the Specials Board - "sorry we don't have spaghetti", ok I'll try ham egg and chips then 'Starter' comes, was absolutely huge and could have fed all 4 of us! They were ok, no more no less Mains arrived, my Mum on finally being given her Halloumi burger was informed "we're out of chilli jam" (it was what sold her on it, had she been told they were out she'd have ordered something else) Ham, egg and chips - eggs good and cooked nicely, but unfortunately the ham was so sweet and dry, and the chips (unlike what seemed like fresh last time we came) were clearly frozen, dry, and like cardboard making those two elements almost inedible We had to ask for cutlery and condiments (which now come in fiddly packets rather than bottles/dispensers), asked for a bottle of water and the waiter slammed it down and took two of our glasses away 😆 Ladies toilet was out of order so we had to use the men's, which smelled like it hadn't been cleaned in a year (a fact we were reminded of every time someone entered as we were seated quite close) So to say we were disappointed with our food is an understatement, plus point and saving graces were that the ale I had was very good, there were a couple of very nice customers and an extremely lovely dog who I'd have run off with! Pub itself is as gorgeous and atmospheric as ever but please please please sort out your food! Last rating I gave was 5 across the board, never envisaged leaving anything lower...
