We were looking for somewhere to stay while we enjoyed a midweek break in Norfolk when I read about the Crown Inn. This was a bed & breakfast in a pub on the Yarmouth Road in the small village of Smallburgh. When I continued to read about this place it became very appealing indeed. Firstly the location which was only a thirty minute drive from either Cromer , Yarmouth & Norwich with other sightseeing ideas like Wroxham even closer. Secondly the room available was a suite which meant you would have a separate living room. Thirdly as it was in a pub where they served food in the evening we wouldn’t have to go anywhere other than downstairs in their dining room. When we arrived on the monday we were given a nice friendly welcome from owner Linda and bar manager Jess before escorting upstairs to our room. This had a nice sized bedroom with separate lounge & shower room. It also included tea & coffee facilities. Once unpacked we went downstairs and asked if their was anywhere close by where we could stretch our legs to which they gave us a few options. The breakfast menu was small but the standard of the food was very high. You had a choice of Tea , Coffee & Orange Juice followed by Porridge , Granola & Cornflakes. Then you could either have a breakfast muffin or the Full English breakfast along with toast , jam & marmalade. They do also try their very best to accommodate if you have any dietary requirements. We opted mainly for the cooked breakfast which was excellent and also tried the granola , cornflakes & muffin which were also a delight and does in fact set you up nicely for your day ahead. Apart from the monday evening which is the only time food is not available we enjoyed some fantastic pub grub which was just what was required after a long day. The menu consisted of four starters a good selection of main courses and a delightful choice of desserts which are on the board. I would highly recommend asking what is homemade at the pub as it was delicious. The main courses were good old fashioned pub food but were absolutely delicious. The Hunter’s Chicken , Homemade Steak & Ale Pie , Rump Steak , Scampi & Chicken Burger were amazing and accompanied by either chips , mash , peas , salad or a selection of vegetables. This really was heavenly pub food done well. As a dessert lover myself I couldn’t wait to try theirs and I’m delighted to say I wasn’t disappointed in the slightest. The homemade Crumble , Syrup Sponge , Chocolate Cake and Treacle Tart were fabulous and served with either cream , custard or ice cream. From here you could then finish of the evening by enjoying a selection of local drinks in the bar or in the peace and tranquillity of the garden. There was always a great atmosphere and where all the locals were very friendly and offer some good local knowledge. I would recommend popping in even if your not staying as the young team of staff led by Jess will make you feel very welcome. So after a fabulous four night stay it was time to say goodbye. I can’t thank everyone highly enough for making us feel very welcome. From breakfast to evening meal and in the bar it’s been an absolute pleasure to meet you all. I would definitely recommend a visit as this place is in a great location. The road it’s on is quite busy but personally didn’t bother us at all. Thank You Linda , Jess and all the team for a delightful stay and look forward to seeing you all again someday.

Went here with elderly parents for a meal on a quiet Tuesday evening after reading good reviews, but was sadly disappointed. When we arrived we were the only people there and went straight through to the restaurant area. Took ages to be served and despite it being a "two pizzas for £17.95" they didn't have any. The decor was tired with dead flowers on the tables. Meals were OK, nothing amazing, but took so long to get served that we only had mains. Mentioned the service when we paid and they apologised that they were busy, despite us being the only ones when we arrived and not that many more arrived after us.

A lovely rural Norfolk pub, from the front a little run down against the main road, head round the back and your welcomed by a lovely garden which has been lovingly kept. Plenty of tables spaced around to eat outside. Food was home cooked, excellent and plentiful. Linda and her team were very pleasant and welcoming. Highly recommended and dogs welcome to.

A really, really disappointing stay. Room not ready despite arriving at stated time, we felt our arrival took them by surprise, and we had to wait for the sofa bed to be made up. No water from hot tap on first night, had to use shower to fill sink but plug leaked badly too. Fixed it ourselves next morning by rapidly pumping the hot tap, but had no water again later in the day. Only two towels for three of us. Nothing like the pictures online - you could tell it was the same place, but all the ornaments and adornments had gone, the blind was broken, window catches missing and generally uncared for. The beds were OK despite rolling to the middle of the double bed. Pub tired and neglected, weeds and fag ends in pots outside, new mis-spelt signs ("accomodation") on the walls. Needs some willingness and effort to make it look acceptable. A general feeling of being left to fail. Disorganised, seemingly poor communication between staff on different shifts who blame each other for misunderstandings and errors.||Evening meal was acceptable. The pictures on the website bear no resemblance to the food they're currently serving. A no frills dining experience. The haddock was cooked well, and about what I expected to pay, but the advertised home-made tartare sauce was not forthcoming. Norfolk isn't cheap for eating out, although the Kings Arms at North Walsham on the second night was much better value with efficient and happy staff. ||Breakfast was a fiasco and completely unacceptable. My parents (79 & 83) likened it to Fawlty Towers. We asked the night before if we could have breakfast for 7.45am (they advertise 8-10) and were told that would be OK. In the morning we got down at 7.45 to a table set for 3 with a box of cornflakes each and a basket of jams and butter (but no milk). At 7.55 a young lady came in and apologised that the breakfast wouldn't be ready as they only had 2 sausages prepared the night before(?), and they'd have to cook one from scratch! She said she'd only been told at 11.30 the night before that we wanted breakfast at 8am. We had to ask for tea, coffee, milk and orange juice, which came from a half full already opened carton dumped on the table. The mediocre cooked breakfast eventually arrived at gone 8.30am, making us late for our arrangements that morning. We asked for some toast but was told they had no more bread. We thought she was joking, but unfortunately not. The jams were there just for show it seems. We forfeited second day breakfast as the experience was so appalling and vexing on the first day, and went elsewhere. Our complaints were met with empathy and apologies when we returned that evening, but the compensation was a bottle of wine and no recompense for having no hot water in the room.||Left the next day before morning staff appeared, just left the keys on the table as our day starts earlier than they cater for. Don't stay here if you need to be away early, there's no-one around. In fact, don't stay here at all until they get their act together.||We've stayed at places a lot cheaper with much better facilities and standards. We felt sorry for the staff who were decent, pleasant people on the whole, but it's just not up to the standard you expect, and certainly far removed from some of the reviews. The pictures on booking.com are obviously well out of date, and we have complained to them too as we feel it is misrepresented. Perhaps they're having a temporary bad spell, it's a shame because with a bit of effort the place could be lovely, but it seems they're happy to take your hard-earned money with the minimum of forethought, effort, staff and...
