BEWARE!!! In November 2019 they installed a parking charge system that is designed to catch you out - you must NOT leave the car park, no matter whether you are using the pub or not. I've been to this pub plenty times with my family who mostly live in the Wideopen/Seaturn Burn area and I've also often used the car park when I've needed to pop in to the post office or pharmacy across the road.
I used the car park in December while I nipped to the pharmacy (the car was in the car park for no more than 10 minutes) and I didn't notice the new signs because they're not particularly big and more importantly they use a blue 'P' icon which generally means "park here!" (this is why I say the system is designed to catch you out - a bright red warning icon ⛔️ would be appropriate instead). Having never been fined for using the car park before I was shocked to receive a "parking charge notice" for £60 in the post in January.
My wife contacted the Travellers Rest on Facebook and they told her that if I took the parking charge notice into the pub they would see what they could do as the system was put in place to prevent people parking there all day. I went into the pub and was told that nothing could be done and that it was nothing to do with the pub or the owner! So I lodged an appeal with the parking charge company and it was of course rejected.
If there was truly a problem with people parking all day then a normal pay & display type system would have been perfectly adequate to address that. As this was my first "offence" I fully expected some leniency - a warning (even a £10 or £20 "first offence" warning) would have been sufficient to ensure I never repeated my offence but instead I was forced to pay the £60 fine. Consequently I feel this pub is deliberately alienating its locals - I mean, what kind of local business treats customers like that? One that is failing and desperate for cash is my guess.
I will never visit this pub again and neither will any of my family. Between us we can easily spend £60+ a week in a place like this but The Travellers Rest will never make another penny out of any of us because of the way they have treated me and other local people like me. What a shame, and shame on you...
Read morePlace looks lovely, drinks are good, food is fine but the staff need some training! Attitude on one of the girls serving behind the bar was disgusting, didn’t deserve her job! Asked for vodka and diet coke, the syrup had gone in the Diet Coke so by the time she half filled the glass with soda water, she then proceeded to fill it with regular coke, I told her I didn’t want vodka soda and coke, I wanted vodka and coke, she pretended she didn’t hear me and continued to serve me the drink. Instead of discarding the watered down drink she just filled it up with coke and didn’t care then argued it would taste any different anyways. Very snotty attitude. Could tell she hates her job. Noticed another member of staff didn’t care either when i complained about the tea spoon full of mushy peas I had been served with my meal, I implied I would have liked more but he continued wiping the table and said ‘the chefs have had complaints about this before they won’t do anything about it’ then said, ‘I don’t like mushy peas, so I’d be fine with none’ after having to spell it out that I would like him to go and ask for more, he finally went into the kitchen and came out with another tea spoon of mushy peas. Would have had a half pleasant experience if the staff had handled the slight miss-haps better instead of being dealt with bad attitudes...
Read morePopped in for a drink one Sunday about 7 months ago after eating somewhere else and noticed how good the food looked coming out the kitchen. Made a note to return when I had an appetite. Was in the area again today so decided to see if the Sunday lunch tasted as good as it had looked. I wasn't disappointed, and that's an understatement. Went for the two course option at about £13, and decided on the soup as starter and the pork loin for main. The soup was potato and leek and was served with three pieces of lovely tasty fresh rustic bread with butter. Good size portion , thick consistency and very tasty, I remember thinking the main will be a disappointment after this. WRONG!! One of the best Sunday lunchs I've had, and at 67, I've had quite a few. Three good slices of tasty tender pork, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, carrots, parsnips, green cabbage, broccoli, swede, roast potatoes, all cooked to perfection and a lovely thick gravy as the finishing touch. Couldn't fault a thing. Staff friendly, and efficient, offered sauces and extra gravy with the main, and asked if everything OK after each course, cleared tables quickly as customers left. Very nice house Merlot by the glass during, and big cup of coffee and cream to finish. 11/10 experience. Give yourself a treat and try this place...
