Lovely pub in village setting! Been here several times over the years; last time we came ( just two of us) the food left us wanting to come back... definitely worth the higher than average cost! Today I chose to bring visiting family for a delicious meal before they travel a fair way back home. On entering we were told there'd be 45 minute wait ( which would have been acceptable if the place was rammed!!), but we accepted this. We were served fairly straight away for drinks but then over an hour before our food choices were taken, we could see other tables ( two) waiting for their food. Eventually the food came, on first look I felt deflated as it did not look like £20 + per persons worth (burger and trimmings)! Ok, the first two meals came and they said the food was ok, chips barely warm, the second two meals came a good ten mins later and then the fifth; fries were cold and covered in mayo, the fish looked very well done and was mostly hard batter, the sixth and final meal came, ten minutes after the fifth meal and onion rings, it was a burger and a load of cold fries and little else. We tried to get condiments but the staff literally did not hang around long enough to ask for what we needed ( we did have salt but that poured out rendering 'one plate' of fries inedible). Onion rings were soggy and full of oil, the upgraded fries were shocking and we asked for a replacement which ( after third time lucky) came when the burger was cold! The server ( Manger) was a long time in between requests and not once were we asked if everything was ok!! Feeling very deflated, I asked the other server if I could speak to the manager and she quickly stated "she already is aware of the situation", well no she isn't because we haven't spoken to her... then we had to wait for her and then go and fine her!! Well we didn't have to pay for the food but nothing else was said, no apology ( not heard anyway), what a waste of a bank holiday Monday it's been. The manager stated before we could share our experience to her, she already knew the food wasn't up to their usual standard!! Why would you serve it to the paying public...
Read moreVisited on Saturday 8th July with my wife and my parents. My father is in a wheelchair and there was no designated access to use. The steps to the entrance were steep so this was out of the question. My mother went in and spoke to staff who opened a double door for us further along the building. Unfortunately the ramp was poorly maintained with gaps between the slabs as a result of the mortar falling out. The front wheel of the chair became trapped. Also and unbelievably, fellow diners had had to be disturbed in order to open the doors. Luckily they were fine about this, but I see this as a major failing and inconvenience. Once seated we waited a long time for the drinks order to be taken, and unless I had gone to the bar, sometime later, to ask for someone to take our order, I think we would have been forgotten. We had not even received menus. Some people arrived after us and were served before us. We didn't order anything particularly difficult, but the food was bland. The batter on the fish I had was burnt in places. Incredibly for a pub with a good reputation, the staff were a let down in a big way. I would have thought that a uniform would have been required. We did see two smart staff, but the two young girls were not very well attired at all. A scruffy denim skirt and a t shirt on one and leggings and t shirt on the other. Plus they had no clue/interest in how to clean a table properly and relay it. They made a half hearted attempt, but left crumbs and mess from a spilled drink on the table next to us, and the one opposite, hopefully not a pattern throughout the pub. It's surely the most basic duty that they can be taught when starting work in such an establishment. All in all this visit, which was to celebrate my parents 62nd wedding anniversary was nothing to look back on with any sense of enjoyment. I certainly will not rush to return, nor to recommend. Very poor indeed, standards need raising considerably in all the areas...
Read moreWhere do I start? We went here for a date night, as neither of us had been in a long time and had good memories of the place. I had booked a table earlier and expected the place to be heaving, as there was only one time slot left available. We arrived and were shown to our table. So far, so good. Unfortunately, that's where the good times ended. We ordered our meal and had to wait a little longer than I expected, but that wasn't a big problem. After the anticipation, our meals finally came and we tucked in. On the menu, we both chose the Trio Roast which was supposed to be beef, pork and chicken with stuffing wrapped in bacon, Yorkshire pud and crackling - YUM! what actually came was the beef, the pork and the Yorkshire, with some veg on the side. I immediately notice that there was no chicken, crackling or (what I was really looking forward to) stuffing wrapped in bacon. I mentioned it to my partner, only to find out that their plate was missing the same items. We got the attention of one of the waitresses and pointed out what had happened, and asked what was going on. We got an apology and were told the the missing food would be coming. When it finally came, the food was dumped on one plate and most of it was unappetising (the 'crackling' was cremated and the stuffing wrap was disappointing, to say the least). Anyway, the manager came over and apologised for what had happened and amended the bill to refund us for the very poor meals (and tried to blame the new chef for the state of the meal, but I don't see how a new chef would cause food to be missing off BOTH plates). From our point of view, that's the very least they could do. So, we paid and left. It is apparent that the Green Man isn't a patch on what it used to be and I very much doubt we will be going back there for a meal. Unfortunately, there is no way I can recommend eating there. It's a shame really, as I feel the cuisine and service has fallen a long way from where...
