The food here is amazing. If you are in the area you should definitely eat here. They have a diverse menu that includes vegan and vegetarian options. I had the special fillet steak and it was perfect. Came with a delicious side of fried onion strings and baked pepper mushrooms. Wife had the veggie burger and it tasted much better than your usual American bean burger. The atmosphere is humble and local. Portaferry has a lot of history and you can smell and taste it at this great little gem. Bring GBP if you want to tip. I paid with card and there was no line for tipping so I felt bad.

Amazing!!! Definitely worth a visit! We were moved on by another cafe who were rude, but looked around for somewhere else and we are so glad we came here! They managed to squeeze us in despite tables being reserved which allowed us to still eat with enough time. We ordered the lasagne, scampi and chicken burger. Buns were lush, sauces were lush, batter was lush… we loved the atmosphere. Our servers were very polite and really helpful and attentive. Very good cleaning of tables after guests leave. Definitely recommended to all! We even took food home as it was all so scrumptious! 🤙🏼💙

It’s a wet and windy April night as I came across from Downpatrick on the ferry! I asked the ferryman where I could get some good food? His immediate response was Captain Jacks! Thank you to the ferryman. I had the hand made burger fully dressed with smoked bacon and loads of melted cheese, absolutely delicious! The Smokey relish was so good too. The atmosphere was great, the service was very good. Very professional young ladies were polite and efficient. Very pleased with my visit!

I came here after a visit to the aquarium yesterday. I have a baby with a milk allergy and am breastfeeding so I can’t have dairy. I ordered the carrot and lentil soup which came with cream on top. I told the waitress that I had a dairy allergy so needed soup without cream. When she brought it back, it looked like she had just mixed the cream in but I wasn’t sure and thought that surely the waitress wouldn’t do this after me telling her I had an allergy. Sure enough, my baby was up sick all night vomiting and with awful nappies and stomach pain. I work very hard to stay allergen free and it takes weeks to get dairy out of your system so this mishap has set us back weeks. Food allergies should be taken very seriously as they can be very dangerous. Thankfully my baby is still eating but this could have ended up as a hospital visit with a sick baby! I would like to discuss this further with management as I think this a very serious disregard...

Been to Captain Jack's (both the bistro and takeaway) many times, any time I'm near Portaferry in fact!

The food is always fresh, of extremely high quality and portion sizes are of a good size. Much of the fish is caught locally as well.

Wait staff are attentive without being interruptive and any changes to dishes are handled with ease.

Expect around £17 for a main each, not including drinks for sitting in the bistro. Starters are worth splitting between 2.

If you're visiting the takeaway, the Ronnie box gives a good variety of chippy favourites and represents great value.

The atmosphere is cosy, without being cramped and sort of kitsch and friendly, really easygoing.

Our server couldn't split the bill on last visit but this wasn't an enormous issue.

Parking is limited (Portaferry is a small town!) but there is a town square about 2 or 3 min walk with...

Went here yesterday and it was disgusting and overpriced, ordered the garlic chips arrived swimming in liquid, put on my plate everything was ruined by the over garlic taste and to top if off a black hair in the bowl where the chips came from (I'm blonde) my one year old daughter had sausage and chips @4.95 rip off has been vomiting violently all day today, also ordered the kids hamburger and chicken sizzler, for £35 for chip shop food I would have expected alot better, would not recommend it or be back, went to the aquarium after and it's bad when it costs less for a family of four to get in there than having a chippy before hand, can't see the hype or where the other reviewers ordered there food must be a different place to me, horrible...
