The plan was to go to The Fox at Holmfirth. We picked up my darlin's 90 year old father and headed to the hills. Scuppered at the first hurdle, the Isle of Skye (Greenfield Road) was shut. I pulled over and we had a mass debate over eateries (we do enjoy our food!) Eventually, we settled on the Three Crowns (we'd not been since before it shut down) and subsequently headed over. We arrived around 3pm and it was quiet. Quickly seated, the staff seemed very pleasant. The fire was gently burning and the radiators were hot but there was still a chill in the air (4°c outside.) Two menus, a Sunday 2 and 3 course fixed price and the 'a la carte.' Both menus were fairly compact and simply printed which I presume allows for regular changes. (Previously, the menu was pages and pages which was always a worry.) We ordered 3 different starters, 4 different mains and 1 pudding. All presented well, full of described flavours and cooked as you would wish with perhaps an exception of a slightly overcooked chicken breast on one of the mains. The restaurant started to fill and there was also an arrival of a fairly large party. It seemed that a lot of the others patrons are regulars. Overall, a very pleasant way to spend Sunday lunch and another eatery back on our...
Read moreMy thanks to Ray Hicks and his team. I went, with my ladies group, to celebrate my recent big birthday. I am a long standing customer of The Three Crowns and, as usual the service was brilliant.
The chef has created a quite delicious new menu There are still some old favourites such as cheese and onion pie but we were all struggling to choose which meal to have. I can say that, without exception, all 9 ladies were delighted with their choice.
Me? Well I had the curried monk fish and it was a joy to eat. The sauce alone without the fish was good. Aromatic and spicy but not too hot, I wonder if the chef will give me his recipe? Or, better still, sell me some curry sauce so that the next time I have dinner guests I can throw some prawns in and accept the praise? Perhaps not?
Do visit The Three Crowns. You will not be...
Read moreMarch 2024 - New Management Wary of going since change! Went for first time today. Nice venue. Sweet host. Very attentive. Promoted the special. Cleverly they didn't cut down size or accompaniments. 2 Fish and chips for £15 - done well! Fever tree flavoured tonics great. Could be that the Three Crowns is on the way up!! But they need to be careful. Check the menu. A few mistakes spotted. Also, reduce range of similar foods & increase variety - avoid too much re heating. Yes, charge more for quality don't overcharge for average fayre like the ubiquitous sticky toffee pudding and choc brownie.... Will try more next visit!
2023 Update - Don't know what happened but worst meal we ever had. Fish had funny taste. Refused to accept this. Then admitted they had wrong fish delivered and it was some flavoured...
