Called into the pub on Bank holiday Monday, after having an amazing day out in Tunbridge Wells. On locating the pub, what an idyllic setting exactly what you want from a country pub. SADLY on entry the usual "East Sussex" welcome a very gruff and grumpy looking land lord, I joked that as all the taps stated "Sold out" that "How does a pub sell out of beer" and the curt reply was "The customers have bought it all and we are closing shortly" ask a silly question......!! While trying to engage in a jovial conversation, the current landlord (who is shortly leaving we found out from other customers) stated that only 1 cider was available and stout which my partner doesn't drink...they did however have a selection of wines, soft drinks and spirits...none of which were offered. The greeting was Gruff, no smile, no engagement and basically wanted us to leave , we had planned to have a bite to eat but the "welcome " put us off... I understand that a new landlord is due to take over, so we will give them another chance...if you are reading this, an you know a decent place to eat (any where in east Sussex) and drink who are friendly and want to welcome customers please let us Know. In the 6 years I have lived here, it's the "welcome" which lets hospitality businesses down. Try a bit harder....a smile doesn't...
Read moreI moved to the village a little over two years ago and thought that the local pub would be a good place to meet new people I am a disabled pensioner. I would say that in general it was boarder line Ok. I stopped drinking there when the price of a pint of Guinness exceeded £6 as its to expensive by far. I have joined the Staplecross club 3 miles away. I was really surprised to find that an awful lot of customers from the pub drink at the club and a pint of Guinness is £3.40 ( half the price of the pub). I heard last Saturday that the landlord at the pub has put in his notice to quit. As I live in the village I drive past the pub regularly and when I look in the windows it’s almost empty. There are a lot of great pubs in the local area that offer live music and entertainment. Personally l think that whoever owns it can address the issues and keep it going. If not it’s going the way of...
Read moreThe staff were very friendly and the pub was clean and tidy. However there were only 2 tables of diners in the pub, and they decided to jam us all in the same corner despite the pub being nearly empty all evening. We ordered 2 homemade lamb pies as there was only 1 steak pie left, but when we started to eat our pies, it soon became obvious they were both beef. This was raised with the waitress, who said when she asked the chef about this, they said they did not know how this had happened. I would suggest the pies are not made at this pub. No actual resolve was offered or real explanation, and although we were happy to eat the pies, it was a bit disappointing. Maybe a complimentary dessert would have been nice to have been offered. Overall, the food was average at best. I would say if you want a drink, pop in and have one, although the wine was a bit pricey, but for food, maybe...
