First I'd like to qualify this review by saying we have had good meals and afternoon teas here in the past. The food at our sons wedding reception was exceptional. They definitely had an off night last night. I love bread, so I ordered the mini loaf for a starter. It turned up quite quickly and it was huge – not far off a small loaf size. We both started it while waiting for my wife's starter to appear. About fifteen minutes later the main courses arrived. Waiter was apologetic. He'd taken the order for the starter and the kitchen staff missed it. Neither of us has a big appetite. As we intended to have three courses we decided not to have any side dishes. That was a mistake as the portions were small and the bits the main courses came with were stingy to say the least. The food was warm, certainly not hot. Vegetarianism isn't exactly a new thing in Britain. Like it or not there are millions of us and the only veggie dish on the menu was pea risotto. It annoys me when they charge through the nose for something made with very cheap ingredients and that is the only option on offer. There were no vegan main courses and the only vegan starter I can remember (a tomato salad) wasn't available that evening. God help you if you're a veggie and staying in the hotel as you're going to get seriously bored with the food. Anyway, the main courses were okay, although I've had food which tasted better for a fraction of the price elsewhere. When the floor manager came over to collect the plates I mentioned we weren't happy about the missing starter. He knew about it but hadn't offered an apology until I mentioned it. Then he implied that we were at fault for not chasing up the order! I said we assumed the bread came first because it was cold and the hot starter would follow. Your bread was cold? He said. That was when we found that the bread should have been warm. There was no apology offered for that, just as there was no offer of reducing the bill, or free drinks, or a complimentary desert. We paid the bill and left without leaving a tip. Bloody awful experience. It occurred to me later. We went to a posh restaurant expecting a treat and the only reason we didn't feel hungry when we left was because...
Read moreWhat a terrible experience! I was bought an afternoon tea for two voucher as a birthday gift and we chose to use it here - what a mistake! We arrived early which seemed to be a massive inconvenience to the waitress, we were seated in the garden room which was lovely! Very light and airy. However the tables either side of us were within touching distance from us, it was very crammed in. The waitress then came over and was more interested in our gift voucher than explaining the menu to us and asked four times if we have forwarded it to the hotel email(which we did the first time she asked) then whilst waiting for our food to arrive we watch two poor ladies get swarmed by wasps, they we're all over the food and flying round them, staff just walked past, no offer to sit indoors. We then requested to sit indoors away from the wasps but we were told there are no tables, I asked a different waitress when our food arrived and she happily sat us indoor on one of the MANY empty tables. What a...
Read moreWe booked in dinner for 2 at 19:30 and to put it short, this was so disappointing. The wine selection was fine but there was no actual drinks menu, and we didn’t even know what cocktails were available. The food was passable, very small portions though and extremely fatty cuts. The worst part of our experience was the service. The host was friendly but it seemed like he didn’t know what was going on, there were a lot of rude waitresses who were annoyed at our presence, and any simple request seemed like a huge inconvenience to them. The way they spoke to us felt condescending, as if we were kids or mentally disadvantaged people. We were even asked if we wanted two straws for one drink to share, which was very insulting. I suspect this was because we looked a lot younger than the rest of the other guests, hence why we felt so looked down upon. We felt unsettled and on edge and it was like this for the whole dinner. I would only recommend this restaurant to my...
