Summer 2022: Braewick cafe/caravan is a very pleasant little site. The temperature cool to warm and occasionally, very warm! I dodged the heatwave in most parts of Britain. The customer service in the cafe was very pleasant and friendly. There is a washing machine and tumble dryer for use on site at an extra charge, of course, electricity is expensive and tumble dryers chew it up. There are fresh water taps , grey water drains, and toilet waste disposal. The pitch charges are reasonably priced. Open all year, I think. There is an honesty box when the cafe is closed. These are good people earning a living so please be honest. A much larger, deeper, honesty box needs to be put in place for security. I have mentioned this to the cafe. I wish the food choice was more wholesome. The showers and toilets are reasonably clean and is open all night. The views are very good of The Drongs and there's a Tombolo!
Further along the road from the cafe there is a very nice little Museum, look outto for its sign!
More places I've visited: Way back on the main road - don't turn off right for Eshaness and the cafe/caravan site - drive straight on to Hillswick Village where there's a nice little shop. The shop service on the whole I found very good although parking is much easier up on the road unless you need fuel for the car. The fuel pump is down the shop road adjacent to the shop around the corner to the left out of sight. Sadly, I found the hotel in the village of poor customer service and the coffee of poor quality and taste; coffee pieces floating in my cup from the cafetiere. They did change the cafetier but it was just the same. The coffee tasted stewed, not fresh, which was such a shame and still coffee granules floating in my cup. I use cafetieres at home.
On Sundays in the community centre there is Sunday afternoon teas, very nice indeed, very pleasant local people. You will find this in several of the Shetland village communities on Sundays; be warned they go beyond the coffee and biscuits affair :-) Eshaness views are wonderful; The Drongs, the cliffs, the moors, its wildlife and of course the Shetlanders. I enjoyed an afternoon on the pebbly beach at Stenness. Where there's the remains of an old Fishing Bod. You'll see Gannets there, etc. I helped a real Shetlander lady from the Cottage to tidy the beach of debris (rubbish). When you're visiting the beaches, the bays, of Shetland and its wonderful, quiet, beautiful outer Isles, please pick up any rubbish you may find that others have left behind! Thank you.
Very good fish and chips - I think called Frankie's? In Brae. A very good Museum in Lerwick, I had to use the cinema cafe just across from the museum which was a bit of a shame to have to come out of the Museum. The prices in this cinema cafe was very good and the service was good. Back in the museum I spent most of the day. I found pleasant customer service throughout. Although I personally found it a little difficult to find the museum with my satnav!
In the centre of Lerwick there is a fabulous, real, little French cafe, run by a French famille. When you walk through its doors it looks like France; the cooking of France hits your nostrils. Food Glorious Food :-) I hope to be visiting Shetland and its outer isles again this year, 2023. This shall be my third year of visiting Shetland and its outer isles and my fifth consecutive year for Orkney and their outer isles too. Don't forget to use the local shop, don't stock up in supermarkets first, please support the local people. I drive just over 1000 miles to reach Shetland! For me, Orkney and Shetland are far more fulfilling than Europe. (I have worked in Europe). You can't beat Orkney and Rousay for their Archeological sites; go crawl through a prehistoric stone tunnel to find its Neolithic chambered tomb! Don't forget: The Broch of Gurness, etc, on Orkney, Blackhammer tomb, etc, on Rousay isle, and Jarlshov, etc, on Shetland. Orkney and Shetland are a Geologists heaven. I hope all the above have been...
Read moreWe stayed on the caravan site, for three nights and visited the cafe once as it was closed, for the most of our time there. Food in the cafe was lovely. Views from our pitch, also, lovely. However as a campervan owner, the pitch was too sloping. Toilets weren't cleaned daily and, during our three night stay, the ladies had no liquid soap in the dispenser. There were no sanitizing sprays in the loos, no laundrette and no dishwashing area. The only shower available, to campers, was in the disabled cubicle. Having been a carer to my late, wheelchair dependent husband, this didn't sit well with me. Had the cafe been open and a wheelchair dependent guest needed the loo; had one of us been having a shower, they would have had no where to go - not good. Also only one sanitizing gel dispenser available in the facilities, located at the side door. We also spotted motorists just pulling in and using the loos. Unfortunately during a pandemic, we felt the sanitizing and hygiene was sadly lacking and, for £18 pn, not good value compared...
Read moreThis campsite was very clean and felt very safe. All of the guests were kind and friendly that stayed and everyone kept the spaces clean and tidy after use.
The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, and made sure the camp facilities were in working order and if anything was ever out they’d replace it ASAP.
Great condition of toilets, showers, laundry facilities, sink, and space for a kettle, microwave, and toaster.
As we were campers without a vehicle, the locals were here are very willing to help by giving you a ride whilst hitchhiking and offer great hiking tips.
The evenings were quiet and the views were excellent. I’d stay at this campsite again,...
