After a windswept morning hike around the breathtaking cliffs and ruins of Dunnottar Castle, I stumbled across C&L Catering, a small food truck near the castle’s main car park. I wasn’t expecting much more than a quick snack, but I was pleasantly surprised — especially by what may be the best hot chocolate I’ve had in Scotland!
Served in a proper takeaway cup, the hot chocolate was thick, rich, and creamy — not watery or overly sweet like many roadside offerings. It warmed me right up after the coastal breeze and genuinely made the entire visit even more memorable. It’s the kind of drink you slowly sip while soaking in the Highland air and sea views.
The menu was simple but satisfying — burgers, chips, soup, and a few Scottish specialties like Scotch broth and fish cakes. Everything was cooked fresh to order, and service was quick and friendly. The haggis burger got great reviews from other visitors too.
There’s limited seating (a few benches nearby), but most people seemed to grab their food and enjoy it while walking toward the castle path. Prices were very fair given the location, and staff were warm, helpful, and efficient.
📸 Photo tip: Grab your drink and snap a shot of the castle from the viewpoint by the picnic tables — perfect lighting in the morning!
If you’re visiting Dunnottar Castle, don’t skip this food truck. Whether you’re after a warm drink, a quick bite, or just a cozy pause, C&L Catering delivers exactly what you need with no fuss and...
Read moreWe bought a hot chocolate and a black coffee. The chocolate with marshmallows was amazing, it looked very beautiful and tasted great. Unfortunately the black coffee didn't taste that good, it tasted like brown water that at some point briefly past a coffee bean. I believe this isn't your regular coffee To go seller, this is something like Starbucks on wheels where you usually buy one of those fancy coffees with milk and cream etc. Those looked nice, but a black coffee seems too simple... 5 stars for the hot chocolate, 1 for the black coffee = 3 in total. I didn't buy a second one, so maybe it was just bad luck. If you buy a hot drink here, you can take it with you into the castel. They also sell hot food (fish and chips etc. ) , but I haven't seen someone eating when we were there, the menu looks...
