Adding review for May 2025: We recently returned to Scotland for the third time and, without hesitation, chose to stay at Champany Inn again. From our very first visit, we fell in love—not just with the charming atmosphere and incredible food—but with the people. Anne was there to greet us again as soon as we walked through the doors.
In life, we’re lucky to meet individuals who leave a lasting imprint on our hearts. The staff at Champany are those people. Their warmth, attention to detail, and genuine hospitality make this place feel less like a hotel and more like home. Each visit feels like a reunion with old friends.
The food, as always, is outstanding—perfectly prepared and deeply satisfying. Every dish reflects the care and passion behind it. We each had a burger for our first dinner, then we split the hand-cut striploin with their cauliflower cheese. OH MY STARS...it was absolutely delicious!!! The ambiance of Champany, with its timeless charm and cozy elegance, only enhances the experience.
We can't imagine visiting Scotland without staying here, and we’re already looking forward to our next visit. Thank you to the entire team at Champany for making every stay so special. Anne, Jan, Bridget, Jordy, and those I'm forgetting....THANK YOU! We miss you already and can't wait to come back!
Original review from 2023: My husband and I had dinner at Champany Inn last September (2022) and fell in love with the food and the people. That night, we decided that on our next trip to visit Scotland, we would stay and eat at Champany Inn. Fast forward to September this year (2023), we stayed at Champany Inn for 2 nights and enjoyed a delicious dinner and two amazing breakfasts. As soon as we walked into the reception area, Anne graciously greeted us and immediately made us feel welcome. She reserved a table for us for dinner that evening and made sure we had everything we needed for our stay. She also went above and beyond, as shortly after check-in we learned that our travel companions’ flight was cancelled. Anne saved the day by reserving a room for them and even added them to our dinner reservation. Our dinner that evening was superb! The food was very fresh, perfectly cooked and the ambience was excellent! Hands down, the best staff! After our meal, Jordy took us on an impromptu tour of the wine cellar and “heaven”. He was super friendly, very knowledgeable and made us feel like we were friends that had known each other for years. Our room was charming, comfortable, clean and had everything we needed.
The next two mornings, we had a delicious breakfast in the smaller eating area adjacent to the reception area. We met Bridget, who prepared our meal and instantly fell in love with her! Bridget’s company and conversation were just as delightful as the meal. Jason, her husband, was also very helpful that day in getting us a taxi so we could explore the Linlithgow area. Champany Inn should be on any Scotland “must visit” list. We can’t recommend it enough and will...
Read moreBooked in on the 4th for the 14th feb to the restaurant. I received a phone call on Sunday to confirm that I was still attending which was fine but asked if I had been told that there was a Valentine’s Day set menu which I had not been told. I mentioned that I could cancel the reservation if it wasn’t to my liking which I pointed out was a bit inconvenient considering it was literally the day before that they had warned me but I wasn’t too fussed considering the reputation was so good. Gave my card details over the phone to secure the seat which I suppose isn’t unreasonable in the current climate. Flash forward to The dinner on Monday and the set menu which was as I had expected a little disappointing. The starters were not bad although the bread with the soup was just average. 15 pound supplement per person for the 800g rib eye (not my first choice of cut but the menu limited us) which was a little under done but I wasn’t too fussed. The side salad was nice and the chips seemed to be the bottom of the pan as I’d say half the bowl were the crumbs/crispy bits. Cheese board and sticky toffee pudding for dessert - both very nice Both our wine glasses were empty from near the end of the main course and we were not asked once whether we would like a drink. Ordinarily this wouldn’t of been an issue but the poor service and limited menu for what is really top money really tipped it for me. It would have been fine if the service had of been on point but with 5 waiters floating about and not one fit to check our drinks including who I believe to be the owner. The food was nice but for 158 I will be hard swayed to return. Disappointing as I have heard many good stories about the...
Read moreOn arrival the staff were really nice and friendly, but the food was a real let down.
Their prices are on par with the most expensive steak restaurants in edinburgh, but having been twice now they are nowhere near that quality. Every single thing on the menu is about as expensive as you’ll see anywhere, which is fine if they match it with quality.
If you charge £22.50 for a burger, they have to be great. They were huge soft buns filled with mostly salad, and a really average overcooked burger. The chips tasted like they were cooked in the dirtiest, oldest frier and were inedible. If any chefs or staff tasted them, they’d know they weren’t acceptable.
There are also just quirks of the place that there doesn’t seem to be any reason for, and are an inconvenience, such as them serving ketchup on to your plate, and they won’t leave any on the table, then when you run out you inevitably can’t find any staff. I appreciate it’s a small thing, but there’s a reason no other restaurant does this.
They also don’t have a kids menu, which makes it pretty difficult to dine with younger people at all, and we had to order our son veg sides as a full size or steak wouldn’t really suit.
We won’t be back unfortunately, which is a shame as we live so close, but it’s some of the worst value...
