The Legend of Gary Continues

6 months ago I discovered the Coyote Cook house and met the man, the legend, Gary. I was travelling north and took a small(ish) diversion off the A9 in order to have a meal that I knew would be enough to count as breakfast, lunch and dinner, therefore a necessary stop when driving for over six hours. Under an unusually warm September sun, there it was. The Coyote Cook House, just as I remembered it, and there he was, Gary. Gary, somehow, remembered us and gave us a warm welcome back. I ordered a chicken burger with a side of mac and cheese and my friend ordered the dirty burger with a side of fries. The food left us floored, as usual. Generous portions and a meal so delightfully flavourful that for ten minutes everything seemed right in the world.

All story telling aside, I was incredibly happy to see Gary again and to enjoy another meal there. One issue I struggle with, relating to my autism, is eating. It feels like a chore and although I enjoy the taste of some foods, I don’t feel happy about eating or experience satisfaction from it. Garys cooking is the only food I’ve eaten in 27 years that has positively impacted me and made me happy. One reason I wanted to revisit was not only to eat here again but to say thank you to Gary in person for showing me that eating can be an enjoyable experience. Colleagues and friends have all heard of the Legend of Gary and the tales of the Coyote Cook House and know exactly where to go if they are ever in the area.

I will always pop in for good food and great patter when travelling nearby. Thank you for another great food experience. Gary you remain a...

Popped in for food at Coyote Cook House on our way back to Loch Insh based on positive reviews on Google Maps. Easily the nicest food (and the best value for money) we had in the whole of the Cairngorms. Which isn’t to say we had anything bad, only that this place is a must visit. My wife and I shared a munchie box containing seasoned fries, beef ribs, southern fried chicken and a bratwurst. My wife can’t have gluten but everything here is made in house so all was gf unless it was in a bun or was the mac and cheese. The chicken was seriously good - crispy, tender, well seasoned, and the bratwurst was tasty, smoked, done well. The beef ribs, however! Wow! Not too fatty, a proper crust on the outside and yet tender and falling apart when you bit into it. These guys know what they are doing. My son (9), a Mac and cheese connoisseur declared the one here the best in the world. But then he felt bad and said mine was good too but I’d agree that this stuff is pretty damn good, and I’m not really that into the stuff. If we had more time to spend up here we’d have come every day for dinner but only had the one night. Burgers and chicken sandwich looked epic. Lovely getting to eat it in a wood fired yurt as well. My only suggestion would be that some bbq beans would have made this even better! Shout out to the man serving as well (sorry, I didn’t catch your name) who couldn’t have been more welcoming, friendly and informative. Great...

We arrived just after opening for lunch- 2 people ordered before us, a family of 5 and a family of 2. We ordered a Thai red with rice and a pad Thai. When the family of 5 ordered, they were told it would be half an hour. Their food did arrived after half an hour, and the family of 2’s food arrived 5 mins later. 20 minutes later and we still had no food, so this had been 55 mins. When I went to ask, the woman explained the Thai red had been forgotten and that it would be 5 minutes. 10 minutes later, our food arrived with apology prawn crackers for free. My husband’s Thai red and rice were very hot, while my pad Thai was lukewarm and the noodles had congealed as a result. The flavours of the pad Thai were very good. My husband’s Thai red was fantastic- the best he’s had. The food is clearly very good here, but there are service issues as we weren’t the only people with forgotten food. Atmosphere- it’s in a holiday park so on a nice day, it’s great! It’s worth noting a lot of the reviews here are for the food service here before...

I must say I have never experienced such enthusiasm about eating until I tried food from the Coyote Cook House. I was up for a few days working when I had the pleasure of meeting Gary. Gary is now a household name in our house and is regarded as an utter legend. Even friends have heard the tales about Gary and his insanely amazing food. Not only was he great to talk to, friendly and accommodating, I have literally never tasted food so good in my life. I would book a holiday nearby just to eat here. There’s even a yurt to eat in! He stoked the fire so it was cozy and the service was perfect. I had several meals and all were cooked amazingly, generous portions and the quality of food was next level. I tried new things and devoured the lot. Gary - thank you for making my stay extraordinary and showing me food can be so good. You, sir, are a legend. We will be back! - Steph and Graeme (the wildlife folk) ☺️

Stumbled upon this spot and was blown away by their loaded fries – especially the pulled pork option which was packed with flavour and super satisfying. The toppings were generous, and the fries were crispy and golden. What really stood out was the wide variety of sauces on offer – from garlic mayo and sweet chilli to mango chutney – all adding their own unique twist to the meal. The surrounding area adds to the experience – peaceful and scenic, perfect for sitting outdoors and enjoying a relaxed bite. Great food in a lovely setting – highly recommend if you’re nearby!
