Had researched this on the internet and arrived at 14:30 hoping to book a table for that evening , knowing orders had to be placed before 15:00. Unfortunately they were fully booked and we were advised that bar meals were available from 17:30 on a First come, first served basis. We went back at 17:00 and managed to get four bar stools. Enjoyed the local beers. At 17:30 ordered four chilli con carne with rice and bread. Two of us had it medium which is the standard strength here, however they also do hotter and you can have it as hot as you like. Two of us asked for the next strength up. It left our mouths tingling and we both agreed we wouldn’t have wanted it hotter. Still, we enjoyed it and have booked a table for dinner when we return. The lady behind the bar was polite and chatty despite being busy. There were lots of boaters and hikers passing through. Local resident dog comes around although is timid. Customers dogs were welcome too. I’ve never been in a barge before so was a unique experience and very homely with a fire going and lots of artefacts around the place.

We returned to Eagle Barge again last night and were served by Michael who was very pleasant. Three of us choose the Peat Smoked Salmon from Mallaig and one Honey Glazed Salmon Steak. The Salmon was delicious and we only wished there had been more of the Pete Smoked Salmon. The fish was served with a side salad and boiled potatoes, peas, carrots and green beans which were well cooked (not overdone). We all found room for dessert which is homemade and available with cream, ice cream or custard. I choose chocolate fudge cake, two had syrup sponge pudding and another the cheesecake. The syrup sponge pudding is recommended. We had reserved a table for 19:00 but having arrived early we we asked if we wished to be served early, which we did. Well worth the second visit for the...

I walked in on a sunny Saturday afternoon a couple of weeks ago and was surprised to find the place very quiet. I wanted to check out what food they had to takeaway. A woman arrived fairly promptly, but instead of saying a normal greeting, simply said to me 'I can't let you have outside drinks' with no hint of a smile or welcome, gesturing to the takeaway coffee cup I held in my hand. I said I just wanted to look at the menu, and she gestured to the menu, but said again that I can't bring in outside drinks. A very weird way to welcome someone who wanted to buy takeaway food.

I haven't had such a rude welcome to a business in years, it reminds me of my childhood and gold fashioned terrible British catering. I don't object to the rule btw, just the way it was communicated. A normal person would find out what I was after and then if it became clear that I wanted to dine in (which I didn't), ask me not to consume outside drinks, which is fair enough.

I walked in fully prepared to spend £15 or so on a meal to takeaway and eat in the sunshine overlooking the loch. Instead I took the cheapest thing I could see, a cheese sandwich, which was underwhelming. I hope I caught them on a bad day but my gut feeling tells me I didn't, and that this place is stuck in the past and failing to adapt with the times (e.g. by offering good food or service). I'm planning on doing the Great Glen Way next year so I suppose at least I know to...

Where to start with this curates egg of a venue? Outwardly nice enough, once you descend into the bar /restaurant the decor is good and nautical, the bar area has a comfy looking sofa and the restaurant tables, few that there are, are clean and tidy.

The lamb shank was delicious, the steamed fish was a bit bland and lacking a sauce. The draught beer was very palatable, however....

The chef and waitress/bar tender were dressed in the tee shirts and shorts that we had seen them wearing all day long from across the water. They own a dog which has free rein to wander wherever it wanted including the kitchen.

They don't have any ice because 'they have nowhere to keep it' and the wine list is virtually nonexistent. We all felt that it is a fantastic venue with potential but very badly managed and under achieving currently

Personally I...

I visited several times many years ago and loved it every time. The floating restaurant offers a variety of dishes and plenty of nautical charm. The food is hearty and delicious, or at least it was back then. The staff were also very friendly. As it is very compact, it is worth booking in advance. Please note that the restaurant is unfortunately closed for the winter between mid-September and April. There is also free parking at the nearby lock. You can sit inside or outside.

With little between Banavie and Laggan to do for entertainment, food or drinks, the Eagle Barge was a welcome sight for all weary travellers. We spent the night eating and drinking with locals and foreigners sharing stories and jokes. However if you want to know the real secret to a good time at the Barge, there's a nice young lady tending the bar, ask her kindly for the "Sausage Bonanza" and you'll be in for a night you won't soon forget!
