Always a welcome rest break on the traditional (anti-clockwise) cycle tour of Cumbrae, right after the killer effort of climbing the hill just before the stop. If you get this far, you surely deserve an ice-cream! That's what I tell myself anyway.
From my childhood, I recall fondly the old shack on the opposite side of the road, with its eccentric decoration of an American Indian and Western theme, and enjoyed the view out onto Fintry Bay whilst downing an ice-cream float. Simple pleasures. BTW, did there not use to be much more sand at Fintry Bay?
We noticed a few changes this year since our last visit: pallet outdoor furniture, a picture frame, and embroidered parasol shades. I'm not sure what effect is being attempted here. I'm more than content with the picnic benches.Surprised also to see a double-decker bus covered in artificial grass. A project in hand perhaps?! Has this place changed hands again?
Sadly, the awful soil pipe smell is a big turn off but I'm not sure where the stench is coming from, perhaps the public toilets at the end of the parking area? Shame, really.
Anyway, the important thing is that the ice-cream is good. You would have to be a saint to resist the temptation to indulge and instead pedal...
Read moreThis is a seasonal cafe, and now that the High Tide is open we were happy to drop in for lunch. Their is a good menu to choose from - on the day we all had a bowl of soup. Now, I was expecting fairly high prices, being as the cafe's location is off the beaten track, but I and my companions were pleasantly surprised with the final bill- very reasonable! Moreover, the portion sizes were excellent. The staff were friendly and accommodating but busy. This is/will be a very busy little cafe, due to the location (its a natural stopping point) and it will be popular with all who venture to the western side of the Isle . I would recommend this cafe- the binoculars on the inside windows are a nice touch that allows customers to view the scenery; It is also dog friendly (bonus...
Read moreIf you are ever over on the Isle of Great Cumbrae, then you must visit Fintry Bay. It has kerb appeal from the minute you pull up. With its green double decker bus at the back( must be a new project) to their lovely seating areas. When you walked in, you felt comfortable and relaxed. It has eclectic decor and lovely artwork, even in the toilets😁, and their bar area has great scaffold shelving. The view is amazing from any table. The staff are warm and friendly. One staff member recommended the spicey chicken pancakes, I quote, " they are so wrong together but taste so right." My fiancé tried them, and he said she wasn't wrong, very tasty. I had Eggs Nigel on sourdough toast, delicious. We will definitely be visiting again. Everyone should. it's a...
