Our visit to the Broxden Manor was good, we booked a table and had a nice seat by the window. It was a snowy night so it was nice to be able to look at the beautiful snow falling. I have been here many times before, they have a variety of menu choices and the staff are always friendly.
I ordered the rotisserie chicken with gravy and sweet potato fries which was nice, but the gravy was quite lumpy and the sweet potato fries were not all evenly cooked which meant that some were quite undercooked and hard.
My boyfriend had the burger which he said was nice with pulled pork fries on the side. When it came out, he had been given regular fries and so the lady did nicely apologise and got the right fries, but when they came back out it was like a small portion of pulled pork had been put on top of a bowl of chips, some spring onions and a few chillies added and it was quite poor.
We both had the unlimited refill drinks and I was asking about raspberry lemonade and the girl told us that you get different types of syrups in the machine to add if you wanted which I thought would be delicious. Well after trying both the strawberry and the cherry flavour of the lemonade there was definitely no difference, so I then tried the strawberry flavoured diet Coke which I know has a nice taste of strawberry when I've had it elsewhere but disappointingly this was the same and no extra flavour!
We both decided to share a dessert and we went for a Sunday best waffle which I had tasted before and it was delicious. We ordered this and was told there is no ice-cream so we had whipped cream instead. The girl took out order with the whipped cream and that was fine until the lady the told us there was no ice-cream said can she offer us something else... clearly a lack of communication there as the girl had already taken our order and put in the comments of whipped cream.
I also was going to use a code which is on the app where you can win something on the Christmas cracker so this was a dessert or starter for £1 of your choice- in the terms and conditions it just said show this to the staff and they can discount it for you... though because we went there on a Sunday, the discount is only Monday-Thursday- well why does it not say that on the page! I also tried to use Blue Light Discount too but I was only told that it was only a Monday - Thursday deal even though I have used my card on weekends before.
It was just a disappointing meal as I had highly recommended it to...
Read moreA disappointing experience tonight, sadly.
We were so looking forward to our meal, but it fell short in more than one area…
I had to return my chicken skewer after it was served cold. And by that, I mean lukewarm - certainly nowhere near the standard for food safety hygiene. Our server explained that the replacement would come from another order already being prepared, but it took quite a while to arrive, and when it did, it was also cold. This time, I checked it carefully before taking a bite - and left it untouched. By then, my husband and son had nearly finished their meals, and I was left feeling rather deflated.
My son had asked for his steak blue, but it arrived closer to medium. Still edible, but not what he ordered. My husband enjoyed his half roast chicken and chips - hot, well cooked, and no complaints from him.
In fairness, both the server and the manager were sincerely apologetic, which I appreciated. But I do question whether the chicken was probed or temperature checked before being served - twice. Surely one would go out of their way to double check before sending it out a second time?
I’d also ordered the sage and onion seasoned chips. The first portion was excellent - crispy and full of flavour. But the second portion (served with the replacement skewer) was cold and completely unseasoned. Just soft, plain chips - not remotely what I’d ordered, and a real letdown after such a promising start.
We were offered complimentary desserts as a goodwill gesture (we declined as we’re not dessert people), and the manager kindly removed my meal from the bill, which was fair and appreciated. That said, I wouldn’t have felt comfortable paying for it anyway.
One interesting point: tips paid by card are shared equally among all staff, but cash tips go directly to the server. That made my decision very easy - a cash tip for our server, Claire who was lovely and deserved to keep every penny of it. The kitchen staff, frankly, hadn’t earned any.
Sadly, we left disappointed. Home for some toast it...
Read moreEverything was fine with our visit at first, but unfortunately, we had a very upsetting experience with a server named Michelle. From the moment she approached our table, her attitude was extremely rude, dismissive, and unprofessional. The way she took our order felt cold, aggressive, and completely inappropriate. It was clear she was treating us differently from other guests, and her behavior came across as racist. As a family visiting from Puerto Rico, we felt disrespected, unwelcome, and judged based on where we’re from.
It was very noticeable that Michelle was kind and polite to other tables, but with us, her tone, body language, and attitude changed completely. Her actions made us feel like she thought she was superior to us, and the way she treated us was both hurtful and unacceptable. Racism has no place in customer service or anywhere else. Every guest deserves to be treated with basic respect and dignity.
After feeling uncomfortable and mistreated, we asked to be assigned to a different server, and the experience changed entirely. The new server was respectful, attentive, and kind, showing us how service should be.
We’re sharing this experience not just because it affected us deeply, but because we believe no one should have to feel the way we did. We hope that management takes this seriously and addresses this racist and unprofessional behavior so that it doesn’t happen to...
