Thoroughly impressed with The Railway Inn in every aspect! We called up fairly last minute looking to pop in for food. The staff were accommodating & friendly. They managed to secure the last table in the lounge for us! Everyone we dealt with was lovely. A real community forward/family feel about the place.
(Note: I normally take photos of the food but forgot in this instance, apologies).
We ordered:
Starters Soup of the day (broccoli & blue cheese) Southern fried chicken tenders Bruschetta
Mains Steak Pie Catch of the Day (Breaded fish (haddock) & chips)
My partner enjoyed the soup (definitely homemade) which was served with a warm, soft roll. The southern fried chicken tenders were tasty & arrived piping hot. The garlic mayo served with it was delicious as well! The bruschetta was nice but (and this may be a personal preference so nothing negative towards the restaurant!) I prefer the tomato topping cold & the garlic bread warm (both the garlic bread & topping were warm) + a little basil through the topping would have rounded this off nicely.
Now, on to the mains... no other word for them other than EXCEPTIONAL!!
Absolutely huge portions for the money and everything arrived piping hot & fresh out of the kitchen. The chips were definitely homemade (and very nostalgic of the type I had growing up!), the fry on the fish was perfect (I opted for breaded instead of battered), wonderfully crisp and not oily/greasy whatsoever. A generous portion of peas on the plate (which had been tossed in butter (major plus points!) and another surprising touch that added to the home cooked feel of the dishes) + homemade tartar sauce on the side for dipping. My partner enjoyed his steak pie as well which had nice big chunks of steak, proper gravy (not watery & full of flavour!), a proper piece of puff pastry (didn't disintegrate in to loads of crumbs and wasn't stale either!), lots of chips & perfectly cooked veg (cauliflower, broccoli & turnip).
By this point we were unbelievably stuffed. We even felt bad leaving the handful of chips on our plate at the end, they were just so good (but physically no room left to put them anywhere!)
All throughout, the staff were incredibly attentive and kind, welcomed us in and made sure we were well looked after.
All of this food, plus 2 beers and a soft drink, came to £51!! Blown away by the value considering the quality and quantity of the food being served.
We will absolutely be returning to The Railway Inn in the near future as well as recommending it to anyone & everyone we possibly...
Read moreBooked in here for Sept 14th, the main dining area was full so we were placed in a room adjacent to bar, which I preferred to be honest, just because it was a wee bit more cosy. Ordering was fast and easy, staff friendly and helpful, two menus, one for set meals and another with the usual starters, mains etc. I went for a starter of loaded Nachos, which was great and hit the spot as I was very hungry. Main for me was steak pie with chips and veg, I expected frozen chips and veg, but was surprised to realise the veg was fresh and the chips were real big chunky fresh ones, brilliant. The steak pie was class and plentiful. I had no sweet as I was full to the brim, other friends did have sweets, all looked and I'm told tasted great. So five stars from all of us that evening. If you are in the area and want good fresh traditional British food, in a clean, warm and welcoming environment, then...
Read moreWas working near by and our customer said it was good. We had steak pie and the lasagne. Both homemade with homemade chips. I would say the lasagna was possibly the best I've ever had. Really tasty. At first I thought the portion was a bit small but it was very rich and I actually struggled to finish it. My mate had the steak pie and the steak was really tasty and moist. Not dry at all like most steak pies I've tried and there was plenty of steak. The two women on the bar were great full of advice really friendly . Even the locals Said hello as we came...
