Felt very āsecond classā to be in the conservatory with our two small dogs for dinner, chairs slightly askew and hardly a light on at any table, main lights and heating kept going off. Whilst I appreciate itās no doubt been a busy weekend, itās the little things that make the difference? Food was ok, not bad, but not great. Prawns Pil Pil tasted very sweet, as if made with a sweet chilli dipping sauce from a jar, the iron skillet they were served in was only lukewarm, yet the prawns tasted overcooked - I expected real garlic, real chilli and olive oil - disappointing. The Chicken Breast was nicely cooked, as was the veg, but the sauce was very salty. My partnerās Fish & Chips was āokā batter not very crisp and missing the homemade tartare sauce promised on the menu. The staff quickly went back to the main restaurant, but were friendly enough and helpful when we did see them. The main restaurant is stylish, busy and had a great atmosphere when I went in to pay the bill - such a contrast to the second class feeling in the conservatory are where dogs are tolerated. At Ā£63 (no drinks) I can honestly say it wasnāt that enjoyable for dinner at 6pm on a Sunday. Fish & Chips at The Works on Largs seafront is far superior, a fraction of the price and the view is arguably better sitting in the carpark looking at the sea, rather than sitting in the conservatory looking at the carpark - not feeling the love for Scottās dog-friendly area, food is just ok (not great) so Iām reluctant to return or recommend when there are so many other good places - Clyde Marinas generally are not dog friendly, with few places allowing dogs into the restaurant areas - if youāre seeking dog friendly restaurants with good food Gourock offers...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreA lovely, well presented restaurant with a separate dining area for those wishing to eat with dogs.
The main restaurant (where we ate) is warm, spacious and inviting with comfortable seating. The decor is tasteful, and the fish tank at FoH was beautiful to admire and obviously well kept.
On arrival we were slightly earlier than our booked reservation time, but we were met warmly and seated immediately. The restaurant was busy for lunch, and I would definitely recommend booking ahead of time.
We ordered the Chicken Tempura, Chicken Club sandwich, and fries.
The tempura batter was light and crispy not doughy, and the chicken was well cooked and seasoned. It's served with a wasabi mayo, but we'll get to that in a moment! The Main portion (as opposed to the Starter portion) was more than enough for an early lunch. The fries are well cooked and crispy outside and fluffy inside.
The chicken club sandwich was lovely. Everything was perfectly cooked and assembled. It was served with ready salted (plain) crisps. I highly recommend putting some wasabi mayo and a few crisps on the Club sandwich, it elevates it to an entirely new level, utterly divine. I actually asked for a little dip ramekin of wasabi mayo for my fries. It's not overpowering on either side, and has a kick from the wasabi but retains the creaminess of the mayo.
All in all for two mains and 3 soft drinks it was under £50.
We will absolutely be returning!
(Can I have the recipe for that wasabi...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreGreat food, but let down slightly by one server.
We came here to celebrate a special occasion, we found it recommended quite highly by a few locals.
First of all, this is a really nicely finished restaurant. Very welcoming, warm and pleasing to the eye.
The menu was of a good size, lots of seafood (as you would expect) as well as a few other steaks and specialities. Good to see they use lots of local produce and not just for the seafood. There is also a vegetarian menu with some vegan options which is great to see. Portion sizes were kind of mixed, my Haggis starter was just right, but my Prime Steak Burger was slightly lacking I felt. Dessert was of a good size also. But this wasn't the same for other people with different items.
It is perhaps a little more expensive but I feel for the quality of the food, it was worth it.
The let down for us was our particular waiter, which none of us found great. We didn't find him particularly helpful or friendly, he didn't really respond to conversation or engage with us, we just felt like another number. However, everything went well, food came out promptly and he changed around some of the menu for us which was good. Perhaps he was just having a bad day!
We had 2 other waitresses who were fantastic, really friendly and helpful and couldn't fault them.
Overall, if I was in the area again I would definitely consider a re-visit as the food was superb, as was...
