We booked a table for Sunday roast and the friendly girl on the phone explained that they serve it up to 5pm but could run out before then and the full menu would be available until 7:30 pm. So she booked us in for 4:45 and she would let the chef know we hoped to have Sunday roast. So we arrived on time, another couple too at the same time and were the total number in the restaurant. We were shown to a table for 2 and my seat was right in the way of the waitresses coming in and out and very close to the door to the beer garden, even though there were better tables available. Not a good start. After taking drinks and meal orders from the other couple who hadn't booked, a waitress took our drinks order, a beer for my husband and sparkling water for me. I intended having a glass of wine with my dinner. When the drinks arrived we ordered our meals and were thankful beef Sunday roast was still available. After quite a long wait our dinners were served to us with a little jug of extra gravy. No communication from the waitress, no enjoy your meal, would you like anything else, she was off down the stairs. So I didnt get a glass of wine. The food was hot and well presented and a good portion of beef. Bit strange though to have mashed potatoes, which weren't creamy, a roast potato, (with a strange flavour), and a whole boiled potato in its skin. The other vegetables were al dente but fresh. We did finish our meals, (my husband finished what I left lol), and another young waitress took our empty plates after asking "Are you finished?" Again she was away down the stairs. We sat digesting our meal, and overhearing the conversation going on down in the bar between the staff and someone local, hoping we would be asked if we would like a dessert, coffee. No it didn't happen so we went down and asked about paying. A girl took payment and put 2 chocolates on the counter without saying anything! So we paid, took the complimentary, we assumed, chocolates and left. Those girls working in this establishment need training on hospitality, social skills, how to contribute to the restaurant making profit from drinks and desserts. The girl who I spoke to on the phone was great so one of the staff has hospitality skills but don't know where she was during our visit. The management are letting customers down and their staff!! The one thing I learned from this is how great my Sunday roast is and in future save money, cook at home and enjoy a bottle of wine and a...
Read moreFinding somewhere to eat in this area is a bit limited so we took our chances with The New Inn. Arrived at 19:45 and asked about an evening meal and were told the kitchen would close at 20:00 so we would have to be quick so not the most inviting of starts. The menu options are pretty standard pub grub and a little on the pricey side given the offerings, little on offer if you want a light bite or vegetarian option. We ordered fish and chips and a mussel in tomato sauce (starter portion). Neither were anything special although we did finish the food because we were hungry. The beer and lager were well kept. We didn't stay long because it was clear that things were wrapping up even tho' it was still quite early. Bar staff were friendly enough and one was even a bit chatty when we were about to leave. The others seemed a bit distracted. Not much atmosphere to the place and we and one other table of 2 were the only customers. Decor is a bit dull and the music was all from the 80s (could be a...
Read moreWe stayed at St. Abbs head lighthouse cottages and visited the New Inn on several occasions just for drinks and also to have two evening meals.(16-24th aug 2014]. Paul and Beverley who physically run the pub hands on give a very warm welcome, and so do the alert and switched on staff. Menu uncomplicated and very well thought out,as is the specials board hosting some very tempting dishes, all locally sourced. Our meals arrived promptly and served hot (appreciated given the busy conditions}.And nothing was too much trouble either. To be frank, if you want a no nonsense, down to earth place to go,(like most of us) then come here you will not be disappointed. The food, the service and the ales are second to none and a credit to Paul and Beverley for their hospitality, and an added touch that most pubs don't have. We thoroughly recommend the New Inn.(get there early if you want to eat) regards Aaron and Beki, Bromsgrove,...
