This is an odd little place. We had been camping at Burrow Head and following the wicker man sites when it started to pour with rain. Without the guts to attempt the holiday village restaurant (if it can be called that) we set out in a quest to find some food.

This is the only place that we could go. The food was very high brow, more so than we were expecting and no really what we wanted (but then again it was advertised as that and there wasn’t anywhere else nearby).

Some major pros, the food looked fantastic and tasted somewhat nice (like I said it wasn’t really our type of place) but the decor of the place was lovely and felt like a small cottage which was lovely and it was warm to get out of the rain.

For an upset family camping in the rain in Scotland, this place did shine some light. Maybe a change in course looking less of a foodie Italian place and more towards a country village sort of cozy place might let it survive more and be more popular because it was strikingly empty when we went and we were still sat waiting for a seat for a good 20 minutes (although when we went through there were only 2 tables and it felt very small).

This is a place that could be really lovely and nice and I want to give it a better review but it just didn’t stick out to me. Maybe a course correction is in order because it was a very, very odd place to find a restaurant like this and maybe if they were to move to a more classic set of dishes and a more vibrant USP.

But it wasn’t bad and for people seeking well made, high brow Italian food this may be the...

What a shame, you can't call yourself an italian restaurant as your food gotta simply flat taste and no italian food on the menu. the same taste you get from ready meals on Supermarket. Been there for a family lunch of 4. The rest of the people were very disappointed about their food. i've ordered for Starters a Lentils and Smoked bacon. The plate was cold, Was impossible to reach the smoked taste of the bacon as the strong taste of the veg stock powder and the onion were take over of all the ingredients. The tomato was raw. As a main course i've ordered a mushroom and chestnut roll served with blue cheese sauce... god save me from what i am about to say. a Vegetarian attempt of the italian version with meat. A complete disaster. the roll of puff pastry was deep fried, ( italians never do that), than probably frozen, than boost up in the microwave before serving. As a result the roll was soggy on the pastry, piping hot and dry in the center (microwave effect). the roast potatoes (deep fried and slightly roasted) where old (at least 2 days) and reheated to the microwave same as the veg. and finally a dessert... they were really italian desserts? The orange and chocolate cake where so disappointed, let me guess... frozen from a cheap range of wholesale chain. Defrosted into a microwave of course just before to serve as it was still frozen in the center. The bill came... 4 people... £104 pounds.... the only thing and overpriced i can save is the Wine... You...

Went to The Pheasant on Thursday 7th September ..... Very disappointing.

Arrived at 5.30pm. We were the first customers of the evening. I ordered the venison for a main course but told they had run out. Went for the three course set menue :- starter ok, main was goats cheese salad which despite not being my first choice was very tasty. Waited ages to order dessert. Chose a dessert from the dessert board on the wall only to be told these desserts were not being served. Shown a list of desserts on a hand held board, so ordered a random dessert which consisted of a liquid that was like cold coffee with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Couldn't spoon out the liquid which was in a tall glass so had to drink it from the container before spooning out the ice cream.

Was told that 25 people had booked for meals that evening and at 6.30 pm people began to arrive. By the time we left, the restaurant was so busy it was all we could do to pay the bill, which we did with cash feeling this was best way to avoid a delay due to the chaos.

On leaving, my husband asked for his coat which had been hung up and he was given two coats one of which wasn't his. I dread to think what the rest of the evening was like because although the venue is pleasant and the staff polite and friendly as you may gather from my comments preparation was poor and it was very disorganised.

At 7 pm the restaurant was very busy and staff were dashing about so it was impossible to offer feed back...

A very warm welcome into a beautiful, clean interior full of curious artwork and soft lighting. Three of us seated at a table by the window in the second room, we gushed at how lovely it was. Menus brought out and drinks ordered, we began to peruse the food menu. The menu is small but full of big flavours. A small menu boasts the best food and allows the chef to perform at the top of their game. This place was no exception. One of our group has particular dietary needs (gluten free, dairy free) which were catered for without hesitation or belittlement. The waiting staff who are kind and friendly are also enormously knowledgeable about the menu and alternative dishes. The food; rustic, honest dishes full of big flavour and memory. I began my culinary delight with the homemade pasta dish: tagliolini caprese and had the saltimbocca for main. The starter lovingly enrobed in a rich, homemade pesto that I couldn't help but scoop up with a snaffled oatcake off my partner's starter! The butter and marsala sauce that of the saltimbocca was deliciously moreish. I rounded my meal off with two scoops of refreshing blood orange sorbet. I don't just highly recommend a visit to The Pheasant, I order you to go!

The Pheasant is an authentic Italian restaurant in a rural setting, 6 miles away from Wigtown on the road to Whithorn. The entrance is a bit odd - a little corridor leads you into the dining space, with tables either side of a bar area, which immediately felt more welcoming. We had antipasto which could have been a little more appealing - we had to ask for oil and vinegar or butter for the bread and a few more olives. Everybody really enjoyed their main courses of Venison Lasagne, chicken in a butternut squash sauce, tagliatelle carbonara and saltimbocca in marsala cream with salad and parmentier potatoes. Desert was affogato and a light chocolate bonet with caramel sauce and ice cream. Would have loved to see a selection of gelato on the menu as we were lucky to visit on a glorious summer evening. ☀️ The service was friendly and warm, the food served quickly, and we will have happy memories of our night together.
