Visited the barley for this first time since it’s reopen this week, we were a booking of 15 and we’re looking forward to trying the new pub, All the bar and waitressing staff were friendly couldn’t fault them, We preordered the food as it was a big booking, Food started being served and straight away some of the meals were wrong and had to be changed, food came out staggered so some people were waiting a while as others ate, My husband ordered ‘the barley chicken burger’ Which was meant to be a breaded buttermilk chicken breast, but it came out completely different, when we told the waitress she said she would take it and swap it, she came back out with the same plate and explained that that burger shouldn’t be on the menu and it’s a typing error so that’s the one they did him instead, she did offer him another meal but there wasn’t anything else he wanted and rather than sit with no food he said he’d just have to eat the burger even though it’s not what he wanted, When the bill came I politely said I don’t think we should be paying for a meal we didn’t really want as it’s your error that the menus wrong, she said she would speak to someone in charge, she came back and said that their not willing to take the meal off the bill. So I said can I speak with that person please, out came a female chef who was extremely rude and basically said you ate it so your paying for it and walked off, 6 different households were at the table and not one of us will ever return which is a shame as it’s very local to us all but the rudeness and the way she spoke was totally unacceptable! To top it off we asked for some ketchup a good 2/3 times before someone finally came and told us they had ran out! Absolutely rubbish would give 0...
Read moreCame here for my mother's birthday meal and she really loves this place and keeps recommending this to myself and others. There's a new chef now and the quality of food and options available are now nowhere near the standard they were previously. I had the lamb burger and riata which was dry and exceptionally burnt and leathery on the bottom. Led me to believe that this may have been warmed up due to contracting stomach cramps through the night. There was no pasta of any type available on the night which gives the impression that the chef can't make pasta or hasn't bought enough inventory. My father had to return his food back due to the chips being cold and when it was returned he also had the rest of the missing bits of the Surf and Turf added which were missing from the beginning. My partner ordered the jumbo beer battered haddock which wasn't jumbo by any means and didn't come with the tartare sauce despite saying so on the menu and had to ask for this. All in all the food was abysmal and nothing like the quality we had heard about before, and other parties behind us were also returning the food back due to being leathery and unable to eat it and this can only be put down to the new chef and lack of disregard to quality and safe food.
The front of house staff however were fantastic and did everything in their power to make our stay as enjoyable and pleasant as possible and this review is in no way, shape or form a reflection of their efforts and hard work. They received 5 stars however the food (and subsequently the chef) received 1 star, less custom and recommendations from ourselves to other to avoid coming here for food...
Read moreWe went here for a wedding, so we were in the marquee, key points about our visit:
The bar staff in the marquee were lovely and helpful
The bar staff in the pub were rude and not helpful at all, given that the wedding party was there from 3pm until early hours they said they wouldn't to do any other food than the buffet, not even a bowl of chips to eat on the benches outside
A number of guests were told they couldn't use the indoor toilets and had to walk past the pub to the outdoor block
The buffet was dire, quiche was the worst we have ever tasted, the sandwiches were just bland and flavourless (single slice of think ham, what seems to be tuna but didn't taste of anything, and pre granted plastic cheese mixed with mayonnaise), there were no serving implements so bowls of lukewarm chips (that tasted like the ones you got for school dinners) were served up by grabbing a handful straight out of the bowl, and there was nowhere near enough food for the number of people catered for, the buffet was literally empty within half an hour (except for the quiche which people did not want to eat)
The place is completely inaccessible for anyone in a wheelchair four or five steps down to the marquee, a step up into the marquee, if you need the loo it's 2 steps up to the outdoor block.
The locals obviously don't like wedding parties as a few of them were downright rude to members of the party and expected to be served before them when they first arrived and went into the pub.
I'm sure if you were to go to the Barley for a meal in the restaurant the food may be nice and the staff would be friendly, but I won't be...
