What an amazing experience! Straight out of Fawlty Torquay! We have been regular visitors to the wonderful pub garden here for many years and know the warmest seats for spring sunshine! We arrived at 11.55 so sat in the best suntrap in the lower garden until opening time. I then bought a great pint of Jail, but was told we could not eat in the lower garden because it was too wet. So we stayed drinking in the lower garden, thinking we would decide when we had ordered food where we would choose to eat. The landlady soon grumbled to us from the top terrace that we had to move immediately and go into the very much damper and green algae covered upper terrace. She kindly took her washing down from the line so we could get some sun but we had to dry the only bench ourselves. Shortly afterwards a lovely couple and their gorgeous dog joined us on the terrace, upset that they had been evicted from inside due to their dog. They then got told off for leaving the door open, and departed before ordering the lunch they had planned.I went to order food and was told to wait whilst the person behind the bar, who had just had her cataracts done ( with much explanation), was on the phone with the brewery order. Her problem was that she only needed two bottles of piesporter and the nonagenarian lady bowler who drank it 'was not a p* head so they did not need six'. Eventually the elderly waitress who brought out our great pub food moaned that it was far too cold to be coming outside anyway. I can appreciate that she would have struggled with the steps to the lower terrace. As above, a very Fawlty experience service wise! We will go back in the summer, everyone is allowed an off day! Thank you to the chef and...
Read moreHad a lovely meal out with my family on a Friday night, decided to go as soon as they opened for the evening at 5:30 (making a reservation is definitely recommended as several tables were reserved when we arrived, luckily we had) the place itself is stunning, an old village pub with many original features such as the slate fireplace that's covered in dozens of historical items from what look like medals to old kettles, the walls are covered in various photos and letters from throughout the decades, you really get a feel for the history of the village. The staff were very friendly and the food was well cooked and absolutely delicious (with many homecooked menu items including the dish in the picture) I had the Broccoli and Cream Cheese Bake from the Homemade Vegetarian section while my mother, father and nan had the Lasagna, Steak & Mushroom Pie, and Chicken & Ham Pie respectively, all from the homemade specials section, all of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals and we're extremely satisfied with the very generous portion sizes, would have loved to try something from their dessert menu but none of us could even begin to think about another course after finishing our mains haha absolutely stuffed, had a great time and would HIGHLY recommend to all!
The carpark is an ok size (certainly better than many village pubs I've been to) but it did fill up quickly so definitely recommend going as they open for the evenin like we did, arrived at about 5:10 and there were plenty of spaces but was full by the...
Read moreIt has been a long while since we have visited this place, however we still can not get over and forget the trauma we have experienced while 'dining' in this place. Just to summerise in few sentences: we have visited the place three times over a period of 7 days when we were on holidays in Slapton. On one occasion we were made wait 180 min for food, the shortest waiting time we have experienced on a different occasion was 110 min. Food was classically British but of lower standard than average ; chips were super greasy and undercooked. Staff miserable and unpleasant. While placing order we asked for chips to be replaced by any vegetables to be talx this wasn't a restaurant to make such request. As this was the only place open in village we ended up coming here three times. As this was such a bad experience, we have now decided not to go on holidays in UK, no more. For last three years we travel 7 times a year abroad with a great success, and we have never come anywhere such bad place as Queens Arms. It's a shame, because countryside arond Slapton is splendid, but in our opinion places like Queens Arms put Slapton on the no-go destinations list. With all my honesty, I've never ever experienced such a bad pub/dining place as...
