Disappointing first visit: We have found it difficult to get a booking at Riverford kitchen each time we've visited Devon. We get the veg box and like the produce. We may have had high expectations. As a birthday surprise my husband booked weekend away and dinner. We sat outside which was quite cold and blankets had run out (a cold july!), heat lamps would be good. Small selection of cocktails. All starters were vegetarian and mostly cold/uncooked dishes, enjoyed some of the flavours but portions were relatively modest (a slice of bread cut in half, no butter). The hispi cabbage and broad bean dish had very similar cold sauce. It may be nice to have some meat options in the starters. The main was nice but again portions small (one chicken leg, wing and two slice of 1 chicken breast between 2). The sides were nice in flavour. We enjoyed pudding sticky toffee and choc cake, custard was very runny. My husband left quite hungry. We would have preferred to pay more and have more of the lovely produce we tend to buy, more warm dishes and for meat menu some in the starter or fish. Service was ok, asked during the meal we enjoyed the specific dish but not at the end/overall, so didn't it up as awkward. We also heard someone ask if the one plate was for the whole table, so think portion must come up often. Unfortunately we won't look to return and wouldn't recommend...
Read moreIt's a chance to converse and have some absolutely brilliant food. The communal tables allow you to chat and enjoy the entire experience.
It's the real meal. Slow food, relaxed service, fabulous experience.
The food metres (not miles as the bulk of it comes from the fields around you) do not detract from the colours, textures and tastes. None of which out do each other.
Fabulous bread to start, then the starter arrives. There's two on the menu and you can have either of both (there's more than enough). Yes, it was delicious.
The mains? If you're not sure what they're cooking or have any likes, allergies etc. Then just let them know and they'll sort it out.
You'll need a teensy rest after that because you'll be stuffed. Then choose from the fabulous array of desserts. You can have two and you'll love them both.
Tea or coffee to finfish.
If you think it's expensive then you've totally missed the point. This is not Fast food cafe. This is a slow food experience. It takes time for all the components to grow or mature, time to prepare and cook. So give yourself time to savour and enjoy.
It's worth every penny.
Do the farm walk before as you won't have the energy (too busy digesting your...
Read moreOn Fridays Riverford Field Kitchen does fish. Having had several enjoyable meat meals there, we decided to try their fish today. It was said on the menu to be a spicy fish stew, but it was bland, and the fish was overcooked. Fish is impossible to cook in a large restaurant without proper equipment. They do not have that, so obviously they chose a stew, and a poor one at that. The kale served with it was said to have anchovies, but there was no trace of that distinctive taste. Riverford Field kitchen lacks the equipment and the knowhow to do fish properly, so should stick to meat. Their formula of accepting only bookings and with a 50% deposit, together with a reminder phone call the day before, must result in zero no-shows. But the price does not reflect their very low costs and the remoteness of the restaurant. Altogther with wine the cost is not far from £50/head. The other problem is that the diner has no control where he sits, or the order in which he is served. The choice is said to be random, but on every occasion we have been served last - including today. That is very annoying. It was not a happy experience today; too much resting on...
