Your view of a meal is obviously very coloured by your expectations of it. My wife had recommended eating here, and when we had a drink (very nice ales and ciders) in the garden one lunchtime after a coastal walk and the couple we spoke to were VERY positive about their chips we booked the last available evening slot in the remaining five days of our holiday!
So when we pitched up for dinner I was expecting something better than food service but really had nothing to go on other then OHs enthusiasm. So how did it turn out?
First up - service: 5/5. All staff hitting that sweet spot of engaged, efficient, friendly, professional, human, open, attentive, invisible. And the 'all' part of that makes a big difference! Two parts sweet, one part sour - sour wins! In short, all the staff were just as we like them to be :-)
Second up - food: 6/5.We were four, skipped starters and for mains had: vegan burger, chicken burger, crispy prawn noodles, sea food linguine. They were all beyond good; burgers were BIG but scoffed by two moderately choosy/informed diners who were very positive about their meals. Ditto OH re her crispy prawns. My linguine was one of the best dishes I have had in a VERY long time - even allowing for COVID. The stone bass was one of the nicest bits of fish I have ever had, and the scallops and mussels were almost as good as was the sauce. Portion sizes were spot-on (not feeling undersold, not feeling unable to finish for all dishes) and the chips were as good as reported - definitely some of the best chips any of us have had - and, between us, we have had lots of chips!
Pre-covid I used to eat out a lot for work etc and it was rare to think (regardless of how much you spent) 'Wow, i REALLY enjoyed that, and couldn't have done it at home'. My main absolutely ticked those boxes and really left me feeling appreciative/glad for having chosen it. I would LOVE to be able to eat here regularly.
Vegan daughter had a sorbet for desert which she was very enthusiastic about. Other daughter declared herself defeated but....
Myself and OH asked for cheese board for afters. It was to die for :-) Three cheeses: cheddar, brie and a blue served with a good selection of biscuits (6 different types? Some REALLY good) and a quince jam that was just stunningly fab in its own right and even more so as an a accompaniment to the cheeses. The cheeses were served on a warmed 50mm thick wooden plate which worked brilliantly to get the cheeses to the right temp, and I had never come across before, and means I will be even more pee'd off to be served a cold cheese plate in the future! And Other Daughter got sucked into partaking in the crackers and cheeses! Cheese board may well have been 7/5 and I really wouldnt say that lightly.
All told this was far and away one of the best meals we have had out for a long time. If I lived in the area I would love, love, love to be able to eat here once a week but I live in West Sussex and know of no equivalent there...

Imagine the expectations at stumbling across the Journey's End Inn in Ringmore. The village isn't big, blink and you'll miss it, and unless you follow the signs you won't even glimpse this 13th century inn tucked away from the road. Fortunately for me, my route took me right past its (very low) front door just as they were opening for the evening.
After a refreshing pint of the local Bays Brewery Gold, a starter of Salt+Pepper Calamari gets the appetite warned up. Served on huge wooden platter with Garlic Mayonnaise, chopped spring onions and chilli it was delicious. Main course was a locally fished Monkfish tail; fabulous fresh fish and perfectly root cooked vegetables with asparagus...and a second pint of Gold for medicinal purposes to ease my aching feet.
Not wanting to disturb the dog - who was very happy sleeping under the table listening to the eclectic taste in music (everything from Blues, Big Band Swing, Pop, Country and cèilidh!) - I felt obliged to have a dessert and coffee. OMG! Treacle tart with a local vanilla icecream, topped with a cloud of candy floss and chopped nuts.
Perfect service, outstanding food, and great beer in a traditional and unspolit English pub...life doesn't get any better.
For me a perfect location just 5 minutes walk to the B&B, but well worth a detour any other day...
Read moreMy husband & I stayed at the nearby caravan park with our dog & went to the Journeys End for dinner, after my husband saw it was dog-friendly & checked out the reviews. The whole experience was brilliant, from the minute we walked in! It opened at 6 & we arrived just after, behind two other couples who, like us, had not booked. The lady behind the bar was so friendly & welcoming, despite being busy having to serve & check with the kitchen she could seat everyone. We were lucky enough to get a table immediately & we decided on the veggie burgers from the âbar menuâ. OMG, the best veggie burger weâve ever had-so full of flavour & served with rustic cut chips that were deliciously crispy but not greasy! I donât know if they do their own pickles, but even they tasted wonderful! The portions were incredibly generous-Iâd say we both have good appetites, but I couldnât finish the chips! It was so filling. We rarely decided to have dessert & had the hazelnut tiramisu, which was also one of the best weâve tasted! If youâre in the area, Iâd highly recommend a visit. If this place was near us, it would definitely be a regular haunt! All the staff are lovely, the food is to die for (& very good value, considering the portion sizes!)âŚeven the rockinâ playlist was just up our street! Thank you for making our last night so wonderful! Sally & Nige (& Ollie the bulldog, who also loves...
