For me personally, it was everything I needed. A lovely dog-friendly stay in a beautiful location. It can be a bit hairy to get to with some small country lanes. I'm used to these but others may find it a bit daunting. The pub/Hotel is located right by the river so you have small boats mooring up alongside. The staff were all really lovely and so welcoming. They were lovely to our dog as well. We had 2 rooms booked, one much smaller than the other. Ours was lacking in windows but that's just the layout of the building but my parents room was really nice with lots of space and a big bathroom too (theirs was an upgrade though so this wasn't unexpected). The food was very nice, highly recommended the cod and chips and the breakfast was great with lots of options to choose from and all freshly made. There's very little phone signal but there's free WiFi to help with this.

Absolutely idyllic location on the riverside - you can understand why Keith Floyd bought and fell in love with this pub. We stayed in The Black Horse room which was described as cosy - the reality being a king-sized bed (albeit two singles that had been pushed together), with a large bath/shower combo. Great value for money, which included a cooked breakfast. We arrived for a one night stay on a Sunday, and I can honestly say the roast dinner we had was as good as any I have ever tasted There are some car parking spaces, although we walked from Totnes along a well sign-posted route, with plenty of river views. This also allowed the opportunity to have a drink in pubs located in Ashprington and Bow Bridge along the approx three and a half mile route.

Looking for superb? The Malster’s is your place to go! From the food to the staff, you’re catered to every step of the way. We were sat in Keith Floyd’s room (table 11) looking out at the River Dart. A stunning view as the sun was setting! We ordered the Goat Cheese Beignets, along with the Truffle Parmesan Fries - would highly recommend. For mains, I did a sea bass - quite splendid with a Winter Veg with Salsa Verde. All the fish is local, which is a pleasant touch. We closed with two desserts, a Saffron Panna Cotta and a Salted Caramel Delice. Left entirely speechless. Wish we had leftovers to go round! They’re also dog friendly - even gave us a few treats. Will be back very soon!

We booked this place as we wanted a lovely farewell meal for our family who we haven’t seen for over 2 years. It was our last evening altogether and we wanted it the be special.

Sadly, the entire experience was spoilt by the main waitress (glasses and long brown hair) who had a chippy attitude towards us all. Food was on the carpet when we arrived and we kindly asked if it could be cleared. This obviously annoyed her to which she spent the rest of the time either ignoring us or acting like a grumpy teen when taking our order. We also witnessed her bad mouthing us all to another staff member after he spilt ketchup on our table. We wanted to order a few bottles of wine for our table, when asking if there were any natural, local or organic wines, she responded with a blunt “no”- rather than… “we don’t, but let me know what tastes you’re looking for as I can recommend…”. Hugely disappointing evening and wonder if the kitchen staff were aware of what poor service accompanied their great food. We asked a few other locals running accommodation establishments about the pub and they agreed that they had heard similar feedback about the service, or lack of.

The decor is old and outdated and in need of a good clean and the food was whilst lovely and flavoursome, a little over priced. Avoid this pub if you can and head to better places like the Bull in totnes, the riverford restaurant, the Cott Inn, Andria in Dartmouth or River Shack in stoke Gabriel…. Much nicer people and great, reasonably...

We booked two nights at the Maltsters, we arrived on Sunday and were shown to the Nightingale room, a very good sized room overlooking the river, large comfortable bed, two armchairs and a coffee table. The large bathroom can best be described as traditional, roll top bath and a tiled shower cubicle in the corner. Everything was clean and well maintained. We discovered that dinner service was last orders at 7pm. On entering the dining area we found that it was the Sunday roast menu, and what a roast it was, plenty of beef and pork, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, 4 different veg. Best roast we had had away from home for quite a while. |Our 2nd night was the a la carte menu, we tried the ham hock croquettes and the sardines followed by the duck cassoulet, there was an unfortunate accident with my duck in the kitchen so it turned up 10 minutes after the other portion, without asking they comped both the duck and my 2nd pint. The cheese cake was very good and the cheese plate was a large portion of good quality cheese. Also they have a good selection of real ales. |The ordered breakfasts are good, we tried the full english and the eggs Royal was very good, there's not much else though apart from toast and cereals.|This was our 2nd visit and if in the area we will return, the only minus point was the tv in the room which didn't appear to work, we wouldn't normally bother with the TV but it was the last 5 minutes of the Euros, as it turned out we didn't miss...
