Very nice place in a beautiful part of the Devonian countryside, shame it's so close to the A38 for that reason but ofcourse that does mean it's also very handy to get to, the staff were lovely and had a nice conversation with the manager about the preparation of the food when I mentioned that I have a nut allergy. The food was cooked and presented well with a Window into the kitchen where you can see everything going on and the high standard they keep their kitchen to.
The one star lost in this review is simply because as a vegetarian I would've appreciate a couple of options for the veggie burger given that there are so many types it's pot luck going to a posh place like this and regrettably luck was not on my side on this occasion and they had some kind of red vegetable burger that I've not experienced anywhere before and wasnt to my liking, my auntie however ordered the same thing and enjoyed it but it really didn't appeal to me personally, I ofcourse made the best of it not wanting to make a fuss about the lack of things I could've ordered instead, so just made myself a chip butty with the bun and dressings from the burger and some of the dressings from the plate, and the fact that the rest of the meal was such a high quality really made up for it and I still left feeling pretty full, but definitely would've appreciate a couple more options, they did say they were trying a new recipe for the burger so it may be the case that it's not even permanent but was part of my experience on the day I went nonetheless
Finally I must mention the stunning grounds at this place, attempting to lose weight so didn't want to sit there while family ate desert so went for a little walk, it's not huge but there is a nice woodland walk that follows a river; a trail around what looks to be a man made (or man maintained/modified) lake with some duck houses on a small island in the middle; and a giant chess set, all in all it's a lovely unique place regardless of the small veggie burger point sandwiched in the...
Read moreWe booked a 2 night stay but left after 1 night due to the noise from the peacocks. We came away to unwind and relax due to busy work lives but woken at 4.30 a.m first by a peacock on the roof outside our room and the cockerel joined in around 5.00 a.m and this continued for around 2-3 hours. The peacocks were also vocal until late the night before. ( The hotel has a collection of ducks / birds). We must have drifted back to sleep around 7.45 am only to be woken by voices outside our window - the owner ? talking to his bird keeper/ handyman about the ducks and clearing out their duck house. We live in a small village so are used to ‘rural’ noise but incessant noise of the peacock was unbearable. I do feel that we should have been warned on booking as speaking to staff the following morning it was a known problem. My husband asked a member of staff about how they managed to sleep through the racket the response was I’m lucky I sleep off site! Getting away is precious time and we left absolutely shattered, so much so we couldn’t enjoy our weekend break. It was a shame as the hotel, room and location were all lovely. Breakfast was not as extensive as we would have liked - toast was not offered and nor were yoghurts/ fruit/ fruit compote /honey or jam laid out and orange juice was not help yourself - we were each given a small screw top bottle. Cereal choice was limited with no muesli on offer. The cooked breakfast was excellent. Staff were attentive - bar staff during the evening and the young man who served us at breakfast. The evening meal was very good indeed with a good menu choice- we were disappointed we had to leave as would have liked to sample the menu during our...
Read moreWhat an amazing place, and the staff was super helpful and attentive. We had to move accomodation from a private rental not far from Turtley Corn Mill as the place was filthy and awful. We happened to have lunch at the Corn Mill and knew they had rooms so we asked the waiter if they had any vacancies. As luck would have it we were able to agree a good rate for 2 nights in the cabins by the river. We brought our dog and the 2 cabins are the only ones that allows dogs. The cabins are stunning and finished to a high spec. The bathroom is to die for. Staff came down to give us a bottle of Prosecco as the room wasn't quite ready when we moved in, but that gesture just shows what great customer service is all about. Later in the evening we ate dinner in the restaurant and the waitress followed up that evening to tell us that someone would be down the next day to fix a drain. Everyone was informed and up to speed on everything about everyone... Quite impressive. The food - both at lunch and dinner was excellent and great value for money. The only reason the room rating is only 4 stars is due to the mattress... It's like sleeping on a big marshmallow. We did mention it when we checked out and I have no doubt it will be actioned by the team. Also we were not able to use NetFlix or Amazon Video on the TV - not sure the feature was activated or if there was a network issue, but it was a minor problem. We will love to come back...
