We went to the pub on a Wednesday at around 2:00 PM, which is not a busy time. We got a table quickly. and ordered simple food, namely burgers and fried fish, but after more than 30 minutes, we received only sparkling water. When we asked about the food, a man answered that this pub used fresh ingredients therefore it takes a long time. But it will be done in 5 minutes. But as time passed, we hadn't have the food yet. So we asked again, a woman who appeared to be the manager walked up to the table, without any apology, she told us that it had been a busy day and we didn't reserve in advance. So the food will be late. This was not true at all, because we went on a Wednesday at 2:00 PM, not a packed house. And we ordered only simple food. If the restaurant wasn't ready to accept guests without a reservation, just don't. And again we ordered only fried fish and chips and a burger. If you can't make it in more than 40 minutes and promised to have it in 5 minutes but didn't, you should say "sorry", not blame us for no reservation. This is unacceptable and irresponsible. we left the pub 15.00, eat nothing. Will never return.

I have been here multiple times before in the past few years and I feel sad to say that I feel the quality of the food has diminished in value. I went with my family last week and I ordered the goats cheese and fig tart as a starter - the tart it’s self was just a dry wafer layered not the typical buttery pastry you would expect from a tart. Next I had the roast chicken pappardelle, there was a good portion of chicken however the pasta was over cooked and very soft and lacking flavour considering it was meant to include tarragon. Lastly and my highlight of the meal was the chocolate brownie which was luxuriously rich and paired well with quality vanilla icecream. (A family member had the pork sausage and mash and said that this was good but pretty basic for the price) I would say overall the building is beautiful and warm and the staff were nice and they checked for allergies, I just wish the quality of the food was a little higher.

Probably the largest pub garden I have ever seen 😳 The Prae Wood Arms is located just before you enter St Albans if your commuting South bound. Be careful not to miss the turning, but as you enter the property you will see the gorgeous converted old Manor, or what us to be a Manor. The only reason I haven't given them 5 stars is because we haven't tried the food from the restaurant. We did eat from the bbq that was cooking up a storm in the garden on the day though. As for the pub itself, it's like walking back in time, literally no place like it really. Great choice of drinks and craft beer and the menu is extensive as well, but in all honesty the garden really separates this pub to the rest in the region. Always worth a visit and definitely in the summer for kids as the pub garden is like surrounded by woodlands and has a tractor that they love to jump for a picture.

This pub is lovely. The staff, decor and the ambience is welcoming and cosy. They have a lovely roaring fireplace which you can sit next to and enjoy a drink. We had the turkey roast and the vegetarian mushroom, chestnut and lentil Wellington. My husband said the turkey roast is one of the best roasts he had ever had. Everything was fantastic. The Wellington and trimmings unfortunately lacked flavour but was a very generous portion size. We also had mulled wine which is some of the tastiest mulled wine we have had. For dessert we had a scoop of honeycomb ice cream and the sticky toffee pudding which was pretty standard. The portion of the pudding is very generous portion but the ice cream portions are very small small (or maybe that’s because a lot of it melted by the time we got it.) We would definitely visit again.

The Prae Wood Arms is located off the main road, midway between St Albans and Redbourn - a long walk or a short taxi drive from either. Built around 1838 with a very interesting history, it was bought and restored by its current owners in 2016. Lots of photos and historical prints in a large number of adjoining rooms with classic furniture and decoration. A lovely large garden runs down to the River Ver with plenty of outdoor seats. On the first floor is a dining room for private hire - conveniently located for the upstairs toilets! Great service throughout and currently dealing well with COVID-19 mitigation. Prices are marginally higher than food/drink quality but, overall, this place deserves 5 stars.

This beautiful Regency building that was so close to demolition has thankfully been extensively refurbished and renovated into an intimate up market restaurant by a fine dining organisation. The interior has antique furnishings and prints and the individual dining areas feature roaring log fires and country views. The bathrooms/restrooms are without precedent. The menu is comprehensive and the food is delicious. The staff were considerate and very helpful and professional. This is a large establishment located on the A5 just a mile out of St Albans towards Redbourne and is thoroughly recommended. In the Summer there are extensive grounds with seating including a play tractor for children
