Beautiful pub with great food. I had the Cypriot halloumi fries (3 thick slices) to start which tasted delicious, even the salad did too which it came with. For the main, I had the oak smoked chicken & cider braised ham hock pie - one of the best pies I have ever eaten. The pastry was perfect and light. The pie was so full with filling it was definitely worth the money! The smoked cheddar mash was on top of the pie and the cabbage with the chicken velouté tasted lovely too. For dessert, I had the crème brûlée - this was delicious and a generous portion. The shortcake biscuit on the side was a nice accompaniment. I have only scored 4 stars for service as I had to wait for my dessert for a while whilst the rest of the table had theirs with no explanation. I had to ask a waitress (who I hadn't seen before) who looked clueless and then proceeded to carry on in & out of the kitchen without acknowledging what I had asked and then seemed to remember when she saw me looking at her. I heard her mention at the bar something about "was it put through on the till?" with still no one updating me with what had happened. This did seem quite unprofessional as I just felt ignored but my dessert did eventually come out. A member of my family was also charged £3 extra for katsu curry sauce that never came out with their meal but this was took off the bill when we mentioned it. Apart from this, the lady who took our orders at the table was lovely and friendly. The men who took us to our table, set it up and got us a child seat were also lovely and friendly. Overall, the food quality was amazing and I would definitely come back again to try some of the other dishes. There are toilet facilities which were clean. Car parking was free with plenty of spaces available. There is also an accessibility ramp to the...
Read moreIt pains me to give an overall 4 instead of 5. The food I had was incredible. Steak and ale pie and a side of beer battered onion rings. The classic easy meal to order when walking into an unknown resteraunt. It was incredible. I will say it would probably depend on individual pallet for my meal. For example I could taste the butter in the pastry which in my opinion was lovely. Everything on point food wise(no soggy bottoms). Everything is "home made" and sourced locally. The pie is served with cridpy cabbage and bubble and squeek which is brilliant and a great way to switch it up from the generic "veg&mash". I didn't book, just walked in, if you don't book they sit you in the "bar area". Still lovely, nice atmosphere. You do have to order at the bar instead of table service. It seems that they neglect the people sat in this area and focus on the people in the resteraunt area. I didn't get the mid-meal checkup, nor was I asked how my meal was when the dishes were collected. 3 different staff walked past a total of 6 times. My plate would have been linked clean if I were at home so that may have gave it away however it's still nice to get a checkup to make sure I'm happy and don't require anything else another drink ect. I will say the staff were very polite and chirpy(not miserable like some places can be). I'm just disappointed they can't go out of their way to give the same service to the bar area. I am paying the same amount as everyone else and would have offered a tip if there was a service to tip for. I'm sure this would probably be 5 stars all over if I had pre booked. I have just ordered dessert but not going to add to review because I've been writing this for 20 minutes. Because I'm dyslexic(thank God for...
Read moreCalled in here on-spec as a stop in a long drive. Had no idea what it was like or anything about it. First impressions were good. Lovely village, car parking, even had sunshine (although I'm not sure the pub organised that) great outdoor spaces and a really smart interior. We got a warm welcome from the staff and found a table and started to browse the menu. We did get a little confused by the number of references to Neil Morrisey until we worked out it is his pub. Fair enough. Neil if you're reading this, that pub in Aberdeen you got drunk in with a bunch of Cutter crew has asked who the other famous person you were with was. They have numerous selfies and no clue. Sorry, I digress. We ordered our food, Boatman's lunch, children's roast beef, roast beef baguette and the Morrisey chicken burger. It's not the cheapest pub grub around, but not expensive either but by god you get great value. The family were so pleased with the portions and the quality. The beef was cooked to perfection, the chicken burger was succulent and tastey and the Boatman's lunch was perfect for a lunch time treat. (Only suggestion is maybe pat of butter for the bread) If we are ever in the area again(or within 50 miles) we shall most definitely make the effort to call in. When we got there (1300 on a Sunday) there was no queue to order and the food arrived quickly, as we were leaving (1345) there was a queue of about 9 people at the till, so pick your time well or just sit and drink one of the hundreds of beers until the quieue dies down. Fabulous meal, thanks to all the...
