A very typical cosy stone built Staffordshire moorland public house that serves the small hamlet of Waterfall near Waterhouses. It is off the beaten track (to say the least!), and all the better for it. Cannot comment on the food but the beer is excellent. It stirs memories of bygone agricultural times. Find it, take a drink outside, breathe deeply and let the 21st century and all its troubles wash away!

After having a bad experience at another local pub, we decided to book the red lion for us and our family who were visiting. I can honestly say we were all blown away but the food and service the red lion provided! Extremely friendly staff, quick service and amazing food! I cannot recommend them enough. We are so happy that this is our local go to pub.

Awesome place to visit and eat and drink. If you want very reasonably priced food and plenty of it, and I mean plenty, then go visit. Service is excellent and a roaring fire if its cold. A very cosy place..

Previous reviewer must be blind, this site takes you straight to the front door!!! and the menu clearly states what is Bar snacks & lite bites and what is main menu. It also states that if large bookings have been made Saturday night that limited main meals may be available Saturday lunchtime, but just ask to be well accomodated, His order of brie was in fact a starter / bar snack, where in the description you would imagine that to be of Ploughmans similarity I have no idea, all Salads and just basic garnish have good mix of salad and fine french dressing (including the brie which is a BIG slice) and where did he think he was getting a big meal at £3.50 again a little blind or not bothered reading the menu properly. With over 15 home made meals on the menu all cooked to order a stomping 5 star reccomendation for health & Hygiene and again on trip advisor, do look there to see some proper comments and of course further reccomendation from celebrity chef Paul Hollywood, I use this pub all the time and give it a 100% thumbs up for proper traditional pub, I think this man may have got out of bed the wrong side, not opened his eyes or possibly to the lengths he's gone to, even may be a local...

Was on holiday in the area and stumbled across this fantastic little gem of a pub in search of somewhere to have dinner whilst we watched the football.

Phoned up beforehand to confirm the game would be on and that we could eat near the television, and the lady on the phone was both polite and helpful.

The food we had was absolutely fantastic. They'd unfortunately ran out of sirloin steak, but understandable given we were eating after a group of 13, so we opted for a Hunters Rump each. Cutting into it, it was cooked a little bit more than the rare I had requested, but when I bit into it, any complaints I may have had were gone. The entire meal was amazing. The grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, fries, salad were all absolutely delicious. The portion was massive, but I'd rather have too much than too little.

We're relatively regular visitors to the area, and definitely will be returning to this pub for a dinner when we next...
