Visited the woolpack several years ago on one of the wettest cycle rides I’ve had to get a beer half way into a trip - and it’s such a lovely pub. Happened to be in the area and thought we would try the food. Firstly what a great place, nice friendly chat at the bar, great atmosphere, and no music, which is always a good sign. The ladies working the service were both absolutely delightful, friendly, chatty, and accommodating. Nothing on the menu was suitable for my partner who has a dairy allergy and doesn’t eat meat, but the kitchen were very happy to make adjustments to the things on the menu - so she ended up with a lovely cooked hake and white beans. I had the onglet, which although was nicely rare, as a result wasn’t warm enough or rested long enough, it lacked seasoning and a wet sauce. The greens weren’t really needed as they weren’t dressed and looked more of an addition than part of the dish. The meat itself and the chips were very tasty. For a starter I had the kidneys, which were very tasty, and would of been tempted by any of the starters as they looked great - the table next to us were audibly happy with everything. I think everything price wise was a both over for me, but being from the city I don’t know the prices around this area. Regardless five stars because it was great and would 100% come...
Read moreWent to this pub today. I am a carer and my client was looking forward to attending the pub as it was his local as a young man. It was both our birthdays, so I decided to take him there as a memory moment. As my client has Parkinson’s he hasn’t left home for months. We arrived with great expectations. No toilet facilities for the disabled whatsoever, had to use a bottle in the church ground opposite the pub. Very difficult to move around in the pub , the other patrons were lovely and made space for us. The waitress was friendly and helpful too. The starters of crab soup , mussels and pumpkin fritters were average. Our main course was very disappointing, my steak was medium rare as requested, but cold. The steak came with a few green lettuce leaves and thick cut chips not thin French fries as sold to us. My clients steak was medium, he said that it was tough. We ordered 2 expresso coffees and 2 latte coffees, one shot , on the side. The milk in both lattes were ice cold , so much so that the sugar cubes we used wouldn’t dissolve. I felt extremely bad , as my client was really looking forward to the whole experience. He did enjoy the company and ambience though. I would suggest that this pub advertises in bold , that there are no disabled facilities on...
Read morePositives first... a lovely setting in a fine Cotswold valley and a cosy, 'village pub' atmosphere (especially on a damp, cold autumn lunchtime!). Staff were polite and friendly. Some good local ales. Sadly, though, some of the 1-star reviews contain truths. The food took a quite while to arrive and did not all come together. It was, frankly, disappointing when it did. Disappointing because it was so expensive for what was on the plate - quantity particularly. A modest roast beef dinner for £26; the one vegetarian option on offer - pumpkin and chick peas - £19; sausages and lentil mash for £18. A dessert of treacle tart and Jersey cream was a small spoonful of cream next to a slice of unheated tart - £9 (for which we were, initially, charged £9.50 in error). The lowest-priced glass of wine on the menu was £6.50. This is clearly a destination pub trading on the Slad/Laurie Lee label. It is charging high-end prices (in a well-heeled village?) for relatively small portions of average food, delivered rather slowly to the table. If you're visiting from London you may not be fazed and you may soak-in the atmosphere. The rest of us seek better service and...
