TL:DR - With a little more care and attention, this place has all the elements to meet the image it has of itself. Unfortunately, it currently represents poor value for money for the standard and service provided. We won't be visiting again.
It's the second time we've been here for a meal, although we’ve been numerous times for drinks. The building is very nice. However, it's an effort to get to, due to its remote location.
We reserved a table for 8pm. The restaurant was only a third full, which was surprising on a Friday. The waiter was a tall, slim lad, approximately in his early 20s. Like the previous time, they'd run out of numerous items on the menu. We had wanted 2 x crab and prawn cocktail for starter but, as this was off, I decided to go without, and my partner had Soup of the Day (leek and potato) with focaccia. I happened to notice pickled chillies on the "Nibbles" menu, so asked for that.
The Soup was delivered with a reasonable ramekin of butter, far more than the amount of bread required, and two measly small thin slices of cheap white french stick, rather than focaccia. We weren’t warned focaccia was not available when choosing. The waiter had forgotten the chilies. It took quite a while to catch his attention, as he never looked our way when he walked several times into the room, and this happened every time we needed something throughout the meal. Eventually, he noticed me, and fetched them. Unfortunately we dropped one of the slices of bread, and decided to mention the focaccia, which again took longer than it should have to resolve. He returned with a basket of about 6 of the french stick slices, which seemed about right if they had been brought at the beginning, and had been as advertised.
The portion of chillies was pleasingly generous and, although had a nice taste, were far too spicy and difficult to enjoy after a few. If possible, they ought to find a milder variety, and this item would be delicious.
My partner ordered lamb shank, which came with mashed potato and steamed veg, and I ordered a vegetable ragu (essentially, ratatouille) with rice. The lamb dish was good although, because of the other issues during the evening making the overall standard not up to par, it didn’t seem ideal value at £16.
The veg ragu was £13 and, frankly, the portion was laughable (see photos of how it was presented, and after I’d pushed all the food together). Rice and veg is cheap! If they want to charge that amount, they’d better give more than a third of a plate of food . A quarter of a (small) teaspoon of sugar added to the tomatoes of the slightly sharp ragu would have made a big improvement but, other than that, the taste was good.
When it came to dessert, we were told that, again, that they had run out of some dishes. We decided to go without.
After difficulty catching the unobservant waiter’s eye again, we gave the universal gesture for the bill. It took at least 15 minutes until he allowed us to pay. It was extremely frustrating to be kept waiting, when we were tired and just wanted to go home. I left a £2 tip for the waiter. He gave me a “look”, which I didn’t know whether to interpret as, “how dare you!”, or an acknowledgement of the message I was trying to send that, he could have done better. Anyway, I’ve learned that there’s no point in complaining or being unpleasant in these places - best just to spend your money...
Read moreJune 2025 Well we have given the restaurant a number of goes (see lower reviews) but now don't think we will be going back anytime soon. A couple of staple items off the menu which we were not told about before ordering. Fish and chips, Lemon Meringue Pie (because whisk had broken!!!) with no alternatives which limits the choices. Had to return two glasses one with a crack and the other which was quite dirty with sticky substance around the too. Main course served in a bowl with a large visible chip. For the cost would expect better both in terms of stock control and attention to detail.
June 2024 Went back as promised in review below on Saturday lunchtime. Food was lovely as before but service was poor both at table and from the kitchen. Whilst we had to wait sometime at each stage I noticed table around us having even longer wait before food arrived. We had several different people serve at the table and were asked if we had ordered drinks and dessert by two different waiting staff with long waits in between before orders taken and food arrived. Our spoons for dessert were just plonked on table together. Restaurant operates timed sittings and if they do this they should improve service to allow customers time at the table.
White Bear is cashless which I believe is a shame as we should have a choice.
Re-visited following really lovely refurbishment. Excellent meal with great quality food and great, friendly service. Small observations only ordered a mozarella cheese, tomato and basil pizza and there were only three small basil leaves would have been better to have had a few more to taste. On arrival we were seated at a table right next to people already seated and as the restaurant was not that busy it would have been nice to have been spaced out a little rather than sitting on top of others although I appreciate that this would not be possible if the restaurant was busy. However would still definitely recommend and we will be back.
Previous visit Lovely meal and great service....
Read more2+ hour wait for food.. A nice family meal out, absolutely awful service. We arrived a little early (1.35) for our pre booked reservation at 1.45pm today. Upon arrival our table wasn’t ready and we were told that the people before us hadn’t left. This was totally fine and we said we would get a drink and wait. We were seated and asked for a childrens menu as we had our 2 year old with us, the menu never came and I ended up finding it online. We waited 15 mins and no one came back to take our order so we found a member of staff. Staff members were coming out with food but had no clue where the tables were and asking everyone if it was their food or table number. After finally ordering our starters, we had to ask if Hummus and pitta could be given as our 2 year old (after an hour waiting) as she was starving hungry by this time. We waited until 2.50pm (over an hour) for starters to arrive. Another 40 minutes went past after our starters and no mains had come, however the table which arrived after us had been given their meals. The waiter had apologised a few times and explained that the pub was very busy. Within the 40 minutes we were told the food was being dished up, they had ran out of potatoes and were preparing more for us, and our food was coming out. We waited another 20 minutes after this and decided to leave, we were not stopped when we said we were not waiting any longer. I feel sorry for the staff who were experiencing a lot of complaints. The table opposite us had been there longer than us and were experiencing the same issue. A complete waste of our time and terrible service, a rare family meal ruined. We have left hungry with nowhere else to eat as it is a Sunday afternoon. Our first and last time at the White Bear, will not be...
