Service was first class friendly and personal. The wine selection was beyond expectation with very good quality primitivo chosen to compliment the meal. The mussel starter was fresh and we'll prepared as good as anywhere can be served, came with toasted French bread. My ribeye steak was cooked to an appropriate temperature for that piece of steak given that I expressed a preference for a blue steak, I was not disappointed it was full of flavour and we'll seared. The garnish of veg was delightfully placed within the dish highlighting the flavours within the whole meal. I am sure I tasted cockle butter but may have been mistaken having consumed mussels. The peppercorn sauce was enticing given that I do not normally eat sauced steaks it was nice to have that served in a sauce boat. I liked it though it was nice, the pepper mill contained pink peppercorns as well as black, which helped season the chunky chips with Himalayan salt in the other mill. To be honest the menu put me off from trying this restaurant before now, as I am not a fan of brioche bun burgers, which are prevalent in reading the online menu. The digital presence of the phoenix does not do this establishment justice. It is a first class restaurant in terms of food quality and staff professionalism. The setting of the dining covers is, friendly and good quality art adorns the walls. Wooden framing within the restaurant circa 17th century is displayed in proportion to the modern decor and would be sure to compliment any special occasion or just as I did couldn't be bothered to cook and given my new girlfriend was tired I thought that I would treat her to a meal in her favourite restaurant in Chudleigh and I was not disappointed. The bill was presented in an inverted shot glass so in all good manners would definitely suggest that's where a tip should be placed. Given that I want to go back and be able to get a table I highly recommend to anyone visiting Devon from my home City Birmingham but Locals who have not tried this wonderful jem in this surprising Town community, where I now live work and play. Oh did I mention that my 3 sons are Birmingham College of food graduates working at the Cross Kenilworth, Crown Plaza NEC and Mallory Court so I am used to first class Michelin Star quality food....
Read moreClosed at 2pm on a Sunday so motorway services it must be. I'd like to update my review in light of the rather intemperate feedback from owner. I've been doing these reviews for some time and am a Level 9 Google Local Guide with 49m views.
I only say this as I don't what you to think I was being flippant or mean. It may help if you understood how the Local Guide system works at the higher levels.
The timeline tracks all my movements and map searches. If it believes I have visited a location it auto pops up persistently for several days 'demanding' I submit a review and sometimes answer questions about the venue.
For background, my daughter and I had just been to a wedding at Colehayes Park (I think 5-star reviews across the board).
Late departure but promised ourselves a Sunday roast lunch before hitting the M5 back to London.
After a bit of a detour arrived at 14:10 and never quite made it through the front door before being told you were no longer serving.
So it's me who has reason for disappointment and don't really appreciate your bellicose remarks.
You may not be aware but Guides are not permitted to ignore the Food/Service/Atmosphere star ratings. There simply isn't a N/A box to tick. So as we never even got to a table I can't very well give you any star...
Read moreWent to grab lunch with some friends. Atmospher was lovely and wait staff was great. I had gotten the soup of the day to start which was red pepper and tomato soup which was very thick for a pureed soup so wouldnt have actually considered it a soup but the flavors were good. I had the steak and guiness pie for main which unfotunatly was not very pleasent. The pastry was very dry and overcooked and the filling was sry as well and under seasoned. The side of veg was ruined when I found a discolored piece of garlic and something soft and squishy which I couldnt identify. Was not impressed by that. Informed the waitress and handled it quite well apologising, asking if I wanted a replaxement, which I didnt so she took it off the check. Despite this i continued and got a vanilla creme brulee for dessert. This was delicious. Was smooth and creamy, cooked perfectly. Came out with the flame still burning caremalizing the sugar which was very appealing to the eye. Only down side it, was quite large of a portion. Couldve done with 1/3 less of...
