January 2025. Thought we'd try the local pub as there are new tenants running it now so booked for a table of 7 for Sunday lunch. We have eaten Sunday lunches here before under the old tenants and hope it would be as good with local produce. Service and atmosphere was lovely and we were made to feel very welcome however the Sunday roast quality was not what it used to be I'm afraid. We were told (no menu offered) we had a choice of gammon or chicken the chicken being on the bone. A large meal came with both meats and a yorkshire and the small was either meat but no yorkshire. The portion size for the large was not that large, the roast chicken was a small thigh and the gammon was 3 small slices of meat and the yorkshire pudding looked like a small aunt Bessie's tbf. We had to ask for more veg as the portion size was not that big as did we need to ask for more roast potatoes and gravy. It was all cooked well and hot but didn't feel it was a patch on the previous Sunday lunches that used to be served. Dessert, we were told (no menu again) we had a choice of three which were local ice creams, banana fritters or eaton mess, again not a great selection but nice never the less. Would we have a Sunday roast there again 🤔 probably not, would go for a pint or two as there was a good atmosphere and a pleasant service but the food didn't make us feel...
Read moreVisited last night (didnt stay long!), whilst at the bar ordering drinks with my partner two other men came into the pub. The bar was busy as to be expected on a friday night. The one of the two men put his arms around my partners waist in a way that made me and my partner feel uncomfortable and we looked at each other in shock. This was not your usual hand on someones back to move past them but more intrusive and affectionate if that makes sense? My partner told the guy that what he did was not okay and he decided to ignore the comment. Whilst still at the bar waiting for drinks, the guy then winked at my partner which he did not appreciate and so asked him what his problem was. The guy started swearing and getting defensive and told us to f off! Voices were raised; them, us (understandably) and the bar lady and the bar lady took the other guys side and did not listen or ask what happened!. One of the two guys then said, "why dont you go back to where you're from" and as we left the other guy asked the bar lady, "are they even local?"
This totally felt like an attack on us because we are not English and had we been, perhaps the bar lady would have been more concerned.
If you're not a local or regular and visit this place, dont expect anyone to check if youre okay.

Tonight we had food from Mai and her team. Everything was spot on. My mother in law had scampi, chips and peas which she loved. My Partner and I Shared a Half duck and pancakes, Singapore noodles and Salt and pepper chips. Firstly must say no where does salt and pepper chips down here, or not like this they were amazing. My partner is from up north and they are everywhere, just don't see them this way. The Duck was perfectly cooked crispy skin succulent meat with all the accompanying additions and hoi sin sauce. The Singapore noodles were superb, just the right spice and enough meat to share. My Daughter had Nuggets and chips, she ended up falling asleep. So as any good father would, I ate them. Proper chunks of chicken battered in house. A thin batter so not heavy, really well executed. A top notch child's menu offering
Service was phenomenal, warm welcoming from the onset and a real personal experience.
Need to visit on a Sunday...
