My wife and I had eaten here a couple of times before, both midweek, and had gorged ourselves on some excellent food, including the fabulous steak and kidney pudding, so we decided to try the Sunday Roast - especially as there are so many good reviews. Sorry to say that we were very disappointed. I tried the mixed meat version, adding a cauliflower cheese (£4) as a side. The beef slice was sinewy and bland, the lamb tasteless, and the pork reminded me of school dinners. All of the meat on my plate seemed to have been microwaved before serving, giving it a 'boiled' taste and texture. On the other hand, my wife's beef looked medium rare and far tastier - which she was happy to confirm. The vegetables (red cabage, a few green beans, carrots, and a spoon of swede) were all well overcooked and lacking seasoning. They were served in small quantities on a small sharing platter which, again, made for a very disappointing experience. The 3 roast potatoes were piping hot but weren't crisp - and were also bland. The Cauliflower cheese, although cheesy to taste, was incredibly watery - the worst I've ever encountered - and I've had a few! The best part of the meal were the Horseradish and Mint sauces, so I'm guessing they weren't homemade. This was a real pity, as The Church House Inn is a decent pub in a pretty village, with ample parking and great serving staff. My previous dining experiences there had been fabulous. Not sure what's changed, but it certainly isn't for the better and we've been put off from returning on a Sunday. There are several, far better Sunday lunches to be had in...
Read moreCame here for a Sunday roast dinner - we were very much looking forward to it, upon arrival we were taken into the bar area where the barman took our order. He seemed very fed up when asked questions about the menu (we only asked what veg came with it) we asked for a Yorkshire pudding and weren't told this would cost more. He was extremely impatient and was obviously sick of taking orders for the day. We were made to pay up front for everything which I did not question at first, but having received what we did, I now understand why... The food came out within minutes, and from first glance it was clear we had been served leftovers from earlier in the day. The roast pork, was dished up without any crackling, and we weren't told this at the bar, or whilst waiting for the meal. The potatoes, were rock solid, in fact I actually cut the roof of my mouth on the first bite. The vegetables were cooked in the microwave. I was not impressed with the meal or the service and would not recommend having food here whatsoever. If I could score 0 stars I would. Very...
Read moreI have so much love for this place; it was a perfect, idyllic, cosy village pub and I often reminisce fondly about it. It's at the heart of the village with people bustling in and out and saying hello to each other. The staff we're very friendly and welcoming, I immediately felt at home. We were staying in a nearby cottage and on the first morning they did me and the Mrs an epic fry up that I struggled to finish!
We came back that evening for a meal and my god... It was possibly the best grub I've ever had in my life. I had pheasant with a black something-or-other sauce and it was incredible, everything on my plate was sourced from farms that you could see from the front door and the freshness of the ingredients was evident in the taste.
I cannot recommend this pub enough; if you ever get the...
