Lovely traditional country pub, wood fires, cosy seating area and a warm welcome. Special mention has to go to Naomi who looked after us on table 28 this evening. She was very friendly and incredibly professional, a credit to the establishment.
We enjoyed the last tomahawk steak remaining in the kitchen which was served with a complimentary bottle of wine, thick cut 'proper' chips and we chose to add onion rings (a great addition, hand cut and very tasty) and the blue cheese sauce. Our meal was served by another waitress who upon delivering it to our table asked if we would like plates? An unusual question but I suppose there are people out there that would eat it directly off the wooden board it was served on 🤷🏼♂️ there were also no steak knives offered? Was this a mistake or is the chef that confident in their cooking ability they felt they weren't required?? Alas we were able to enjoy our meal using the usual table cutlery. Our only comment being the sauce was very thin and not very cheesy.
Following our meal we opted for a dessert from the specials menu. A Jamaican ginger cake sundae with rum and raisin ice cream and fruit and nut chocolate brittle, stem ginger and Chantilly cream. Sounds delicious! After approximately 25-35 minutes this was delivered and unfortunately didn't match the wow factor our main course had. In fact I'd say it lacked everything and appeared to be a sundae glass with some fairly bland ice cream topped with a 99 style flake! Definitely not worth the wait.
We bought these points up with Naomi who was very apologetic and removed the items that didn't meet their expectations from our bill. We were wished safe travels and bid farewell.
In conclusion I'd say we left as happy customers despite the few minor issues encountered and are looking forward to returning. I have no doubt that should you choose to visit you would equally...
Read moreOld and charming thatched pub in a village. Dates back to ad1290. Booked a table for 2 online today (Friday 4th August for 6pm). Was seated immediately. Waited a while for drinks order to be taken. Ordered food as drinks arrived. Food served in good time - 2 excellent fillet steaks on steak night. Cooked as asked, presented well, decent portion. Superb!
Staff were really not great. Ok but could have been so much better. Can't complain but they did not receive tips. Bill was fair value and no complaints.
Payment has to be made at the bar - not at the table, which was rather odd. After a wait to pay at the bar I asked the young lady on the till why they don't take payment at the table only to be told "people prefer to pay at the bar". I asked how she knew that? Did you ask customers or did they tell you that? She replied "it's how we are trained"?!?!?
Talking with my mother on the way home (she lives nearby), we agreed the food was lovely. I mentioned about the lacklustre service to which she also agreed. I said I would not bother to return to The Ley Arms and she said there are better pubs in the area and she would not go again. A shame for an experience that could have been so much more positive and...
Read moreI have been staying in Kenn for a few weeks (I normally live in Exeter) and thinking how beautiful the pub looks. Every time I looked at the menu online though I could see that there is nothing for vegans and that the vegetarian option is lacking the care and imagination of the rest of the menu. Wishing to take my grandmother out for a meal, I phoned the venue and spoke to Linda about the menu. As a vegan, I recognised well the refrain "we don't have a vegan option, but we can adapt" followed by a small list of things I could have if they removed main features (oh, three bean chilli and nachos as the only option is not really that exciting) , and the words "oh, but I suppose you can't have the brie/creme fraiche" etc. A vegan doesn't want to have something removed, they want to have something as compelling as every other diner is receiving. It is perfectly possible to create a good vegan option, and this is being done everywhere with great success. Sadly, whilst The Ley Arms looks like a beautiful place to dine, it won't be recieving my custom whilst I am staying in Kenn, nor after I...
