Rose & Crown — Restaurant in Tendring

If you are disabled you are not welcome here and you cannot get a room. Which is bad enough, but at least put it on your hotels.com profile so I know not to book with you. Or answer the phone instead of sending it straight to voicemail, that would be nice.

I am a wheelchair user. I booked here through hotels.com. The listing states "no lift" so as I always do, I emailed the property asking for a room on the ground floor. I tried to call them about a separate issue, and they do not answer their phone. It rings once and goes straight to a generic voicemail. Called multiple times over about a 5 hour span and got nothing. So I went to their website to check it was the right number, and saw that they have ZERO rooms that a person with mobility issues can even get to the door of. Not just no accessible rooms as in no roll in showers or lowered beds, but ZERO ROOMS without step access.

As per their website: "NB Please note there is no wheelchair access to the rooms"

Their hotels.com listing does NOT state this as of today. It simply states "no lift" which is why I emailed to ask for a ground floor room. Ended up fighting hotels.com for a refund because they also couldn't get in contact with the hotel in any way. They tried to tell me that it was up to the hotel whether to refund me, which I just know would have ended in the hotel ghosting me and charging me a no show fee. Ended up getting hotels.com credit for the amount I paid, but when your hotel doesn't serve disabled people in 2025,that should be the first thing on your description. And frankly, to have zero rooms for anyone in a wheelchair in 2025 is unconscionable. Shame on y'all. Get a lift or a stair lift and stop...

Dreadful service and no management present. Recently went to Rose and Crown for Sunday dinner, 5pm and it was dead (everywhere else fully booked) there was one other couple sat in the dining area. The young girl got our drinks and took orders within the first 5 minutes.

I finished my drink 30 minutes later, no food at this point and not another look from the very young staff which were joking with each other at the bar area. I went to the bar to order another drink, no option of 'don't worry sir i'll bring it over for you' or anything of the sort. At 5.45 my daughter was starving and tired (place still empty) no sight of any staff checking in on my table since the order was taken. I approached the bar as the youngsters were giggling and talking amongst themselves to an older guy at the bar, I moaned and said this isn't good enough, no-one wanted to deal with my complaint and the young lady Emma or Emily was abrupt and dismissive of my complaint. An older chap talked to me and said he was going to call the owners, he then disappeared completely and never came back!!!!!!

I asked for the owners to call me today and left my detail, I was assured this would happen between 9am-2pm and shocker, no call received still and it's 3pm! Take some responsibility!!!!

The service I received was so so poor. An empty pub on a Sunday afternoon when everywhere else is fully booked is a fine sign to say never go there again!! I live in the village and I will be advising all of my experience and not be going back there again. Don't put youngsters in charge when they have no service...

What should have been a good experience based on reviews just wasn't. We arrived here after just missing kitchen service at 2 other local pubs and were glad the Rose & Crown were still serving food. I ordered drinks at the bar and went through to the beer garden, which is lovely btw. After about 10mins a guy from the bar brought the drinks theough. We asked if we could order lunch. He was just finishing his shift and said he would pass on the order to a colleague. At that point I felt as if something wasn't right as the order was not written down. More than 30mins passed and still no food. I just knew what was coming next. I went through to the bar and asked the staff when our order was coming at which point there was both confusion & slight panic as they realized no order was placed. Credit to the manager, he offered to get the order rushed through in 10mins which is great, but a freshly made pizza, goats cheese salad & wedges ain't coming out in 10mins. We politely declined and left. What is most annoying is that the place had more staff in than customers, yet nobody was going round the beer garden tables checking if customers were needing anything. Had this been the case, we wouldn't have wasted nearly an hour of our time...
