Such a disappointing experience from a beautiful location. Came here with a group (pre-booked in person with the landlady) to watch the Cheltenham Gold Cup last Friday. Upon our arrival we were greeted with questioning looks and scowls from the staff, and within an hour she had taken our group leader to one side and given her a "dressing down" for us having arrived in high spirits (not drunk but had had a drink before arriving). We were singled out as an unwelcome party for the rest of the day, being told we "must order food if we are going to stay for the afternoon", the landlady picking and choosing who she can and can't serve alcohol, singling out a close friend of mine for 2 hours and then changing her mind later.. And upon leaving we were actually locked out of the premesis and waited for our bus home in the rain for half an hour! Such a shame the landlady had to be so unwelcoming because the pub itself is lovely and the food isn't bad (portions are quite small though). Overall I would assume this landlady is just generally unwelcoming to outsiders. Will not be booking...
Read moreWe enjoyed our lunch here. There was a big choice, including small and big meals with vegetarian and vegan options. What we had was very good and the service was great too; strangely, even my cider seemed more tasty than normal, so I had an extra half. Atmosphere was pleasantly relaxed and unpretentious. We felt the customers were mostly locals rather than walkers like us. Understandably, we had to leave our muddy boots in the porch as the bar area was mostly carpeted, but we were allowed to bring our dog in. In some pubs where we have had to leave our boots in a hall or porch we have found large slippers available to keep our feet warm; this is rare but something I hope becomes more common. We love our dog, so it would have been nice if he could have got a sausage or piece of chicken in gravy for him, something that is now not so rare. They are the two things that would have made a first class walkers pub, but if you are just driving there (it has a good size car park) then you may feel it's...
Read moreGreat pub to visit with children. They have a lovely garden with plenty of tables and lots of childrens play equipment. The garden is also slightly sunken so very sheltered from the wind and quite a sun trap. I didn't actually go inside (my wife did the ordering) but from outside it appears to be a proper country pub.
The #donningtonales was excellent. The food was good. The staff were efficient and cheerful. Thanks to them all.
We visited quite a few pubs in the area. All had gardens. Snowshill Arms was by far the best. A few slides and climbing frames really makes a difference when you have kids. It enables you to stay and have a few beers without bored kids anoying other punters! So many other pubs don't bother, even when they have space. It's a...
