Rurally based high class steak house positioned as an upmarket venue. Lovely decor inside, but a bit dark. Rib eye steak with garlic/parmesan chips, plus starter, no drinks £102 for two people. Beautifully cooked full flavour ribeye, though unexpectedly fatty/gristly. Everything seems to be an additional cost here, steak comes on its own. Sadly, chips weren't hot, nor was the bearnaise sauce (which was completely cold!). I asked for it to be warmed and it came back still cold. By then I was half way through steak. This isnt a minor matter, if I request a food then thats what I want as part of that meal, I hate things like this being brushed off as minor. Steak cooled quickly because plate not warm (I hate this in restaurants, why won't places warm plates). Scallop, black pudding and butter squash starter was lovely, full of flavour and an encouraging start to the meal. Some excellent starters on the menu, well presented and flavoursome. Negatives: Its totally unacceptable to serve cold food and a complete failure of service, not fixing the issue is bad too. Lets not forget we're handing over more than £100 for this! On the back of this visit a failure is worth just 1 star, it just is. However, I've been here before and they're better than this generally, my previous visit was good. Steaks rival Miller and Carter for flavour and as good as a number of single michelin star restaurants Ive been too. I know theyre better than todays poor showing so Ill give them the four stars I think the food, setting and service should be worth based on previous experience and the flavour/quality of todays food (when finally warm!) If it hasn't improved next time you're getting one star, because that's a lot of money to pay for quite a...
Read moreI booked a table for our 44th wedding anniversary. My husband had heard good things about Prime and had wanted to eat here for ages, so we were really looking forward to the meal, but unfortunately the evening of 23rd July didn't live up to expectations. We we sat upstairs in a small area with two other tables, next to the bar, however the occupants on the two other tables turned out to be very loud. I ordered the king prawns which were £12.90, very expensive I thought for what turned out to be just 3 small butterfly prawns. This dish also had coriander scattered over the top which I cannot stand. Had this been noted on the menu I would have asked for it to be omitted. My husband had the crispy squid which he said was actually very good. We then had the Chateaubriand which was to share. The menu stated this was served with two sides so we asked for the triple cooked chips and the mushrooms. As the steak was for two people to share we assumed that the sides would also be portions for two, but they were not. The chips were served in a small metal bucket and there were barely enough for one person let alone two. Fortunately we had also ordered grilled tomatoes and broccoli, but the only things that arrived even vaguely hot were the chips. The vegetables were all luke warm at best. I will say that the girl who served us was very pleasant and we could not fault her service. So our much anticipated anniversary meal actually turned out to be a disappointment. I did not complain at the time as my husband had chosen this restaurant and I did not want to spoil the evening for him. However, the following day he said he had also been very disappointed with the evening so I don't think we are likely to...
Read moreVery disappointing. We had Sunday lunch yesterday (7 adults), to celebrate a double birthday. This was all the more important and special as it was a family get together paid for by our mother, who is terminally ill. We had chosen to go back there as we’d had a fantastic family dinner there towards the end of last year. Firstly I’ll say that the steaks that were ordered, the starters and desserts were all very good. The issues were around the ribs and roast dinners, and the subsequent handling of it by the staff afterwards. The ribs were overcooked, dry and looked burnt from sitting under a grill. They shouldn’t have been brought to the table like that. I complained and they asked if I wanted something else from the menu so I asked for a small ribeye steak. That was fine but they charged me for the steak which was a higher price. No other restaurant would do that. With the roast dinners (3) all had cold and rock hard potatoes, and the rest of the veg was warm at best. When the waiter asked my mother how her roast chicken was, which she’d hardly touched ( and was starving), she told him it was ‘diabolical’. He didn’t even answer. He ignored her. When the bill arrived there were no deductions. We had to argue to get the cost of my mum’s roast chicken removed. They then only took another £4 off. It didn’t feel very special when we left and my mum in particular was very disappointed. We’ve spent well over £1000 there in just two visits (I’ve also been to the St Albans restaurant too) and would have returned but for what we experienced yesterday. It’s not cheap so the quality of your food and service need to be excellent. Neither were, so we won’t be returning to any of your...
