After the worst day at work and wanting to quit I visited the union as my local hotel wasn’t serving food so I searched for a hot meal. Visiting the union inn was the best thing about my day. I parked in the free car park and walked in to the bar from the rear to a few locals sat at the bar, there was no cow boy looks here, because the bar man immediately greeted me and asked what I was after. A menu was in my hands within ten seconds and I told the man what I would like to order, he then poured my ale and took it to my table and showed me my table. I glanced at my phone as the signal was poor and searched for WiFi bu the man reappeared and asked me if I would like any sauces and then told me the WiFi password. My meal arrived a few minutes later and the medium rare steak was cooked to perfection. In the last two months I’ve ate at various pubs and hotels but this was genuinely it. No rubbish, no small portion just a steak that was top notch, I couldn’t have done better myself. I know this seems over the top but after the day I had this pub saved my head and my stomach. Appreciated beyond words I’d 1000% revisit. Thank you for being a genuine pub that serves genuinely great food and doesn’t make visitors feel like outsiders. Well done.

Yes! If you're ever in Devon, give The Union Inn a look. You won't be disappointed! From our initial greeting from Nigel at the bar, we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. There is something for everyone on the menu. I enjoyed the lamb shank in red wine and Bev had a vegetarian dish with walnut loaf and butternut squash. Mum had a lamb hot pot that was perfect. Our desserts topped off the dinner, the apple and fruit crumble proved an excellent choice. Thanks Matthew. Best wishes for success in the future.

We ate here last night and it was fantastic. Lovely friendly service and delicious food. Generous portions and reasonably priced too. A little gem in the middle of nowhere so make the effort to drive out there as you won’t be disappointed. We will be back.

A rare find! So we booked into The Woodford Bridge (having stayed there quite a few times before and had an excellent meal there previously) for my birthday as a treat (combining work with this) After having driven for over 15 hours in the last 24 (and delivered a workshop) the last thing we wanted to do was drive again. However that’s what we had to do as no one bothered to notify us the restaurant and bar was closed at The Woodford (no responses to my emails..) So as you may probably gather by the tone of this, I was pretty miffed and exhausted. Having then to have to google and The Union up as the closest, we grudgingly got back in the car and drove.

What a wonderful surprise, the bar keep was just a ray of sunshine (and I suspect he saw the panicked look in my eye and took pity when I pleaded “do you have food?” ) We were then presented with a menu more in keeping with a Michelin star restaurant than pub fare. My husband had the steak (cooked as God intended, blue) and I had the mussels. Food was quick and hot and tasty. Portions were great value and unfortunately too stuffed for pudding.

Overall not a bad ending for a somewhat alternative birthday bur the barkeep was the start of the show. Thank you Union Inn.

Ps do you have rooms as well won’t be staying at Woodford...

Went there for Sunday lunch. The food was quite poor quality overall, although the beef was ok. Very few customers considering there are not many restaurants / pubs around. Overall disappointing.

Response to owners comments. The table we were given was in an alcove with us having to stare at another couple yet we were the only ones in the restaurant. We did not like the table as the seats were too low. We did not complain about only being a Sunday lunch, although my wife was surprised at the little choice on offer, either beef or pork. I disagree that we were rude, just matter of fact. My wife told the waiter it was the worst Sunday lunch she could remember having, particularly the roast potatoes were obviously old and warmed up. The barmaid was quite cold...
