Really quirky old coaching inn. We visited on what felt like the hottest days of the summer so far. The rooms are in the eaves so are very cosy. I would like to suggest that the pub managers maybe invest in a couple of portable air con units! The food was lovely and the drinks were thirst quenching. The cherry tree has a good gin menu. I tried Elderflower and Grapefruit, we need to go back and try a few more. The staff and customers alike were friendly and were happy to give out tips on the best things to see in Oxford. We joined in with the pub quiz and won the pontoon playoff!! We watched the England v Columbia game in the courtyard, there's an outside TV just for the world Cup, a very tense couple of hours but great all the same. The only negatives I can pick out are that the loo hadn't been cleaned and some of the drawers were missing knobs. I'm sure the loo was an oversight and the drawers most likely a victim of being well used. The managers of the pub are clearly in the throes of tidying and enhancing the pub as the courtyard had had a new fence and borders just before we arrived and it was super. Go with an open mind and enjoy the pub for what it ultimately is, a local hostelry and you will have a good time. There are a lot of reviews complaining about the road, that's not the pubs fault just a sign that just about everything happens by road and the proximity to major highways...
Read moreSpacious car park, good location for walks, dog friendly, welcoming staff.... unfortunately, it's not all positive. Breakfast is not good value, we were offered just the continental at £10pp (no cooked breakfast offered), nor is it "all you can eat", 3 guests for breakfast, 3 yoghurts (you can do the maths), and instant coffee you make yourself (that was a first, in a pub / hotel setting). What was on offer was limited, no pastries, no meats. The room we had opened on to the beer garden, if you get a room with same location you're likely to have a quieter night as it's away from the road, once the pub has closed. The rooms themselves needed TLC, no mirror over dressing table adjacent to hairdryer, limescale on shower head, in toilet, around bath, pealing paint, shower head fell off, riser rail not fixed to the wall, shower curtain needed a clean (replaced) limited clothing storage space (just one draw), dead insects in light fitting, broken bin... it's a shame, a few £ spent and a couple of hours, the review would be different. As it is, it's not good value, particularly the breakfast, can...
Read moreWe return 'home' for visited every 10-24 months, and when doing so we look for places to stay that offer a variety of things: character, history, comfort, service and price. The Cherry Tree Inn at Steventon, between Wantage and Didcot in Oxfordshire, ticked all those boxes .. and more.
An 18th Century Inn situated in the Oxfordshire countryside, boasting oak beams, low ceilings, original structure, which all add to the ambience and character of this place. Add on great food, large selection of ales, engaging staff and the qwerks of an aged building (the internal stairway shows it's age, as do the hallways to the rooms - but in a good way) and guests will have a great experience that they will cherish.
Prices are favorably comparable to other similar locations, and quietness and location of the village to main routes ensures both a pleasant stay without the need to navigate many country roads when the need to visit surroundings is required.
This in is definitely on our "always consider" list when visiting southern Oxfordshire, and we have no hesitation in providing a 5...
