Perhaps the Black Prince was starting on the back foot as not only myself but my two dining companions all have a history of working in kitchens. Id like to start with the fact all the food was presented very well.....We ordered the chicken goujons. Calamari with lemon mayo and King prawns for starters. The Calamari unsurprisingly where not fresh and I struggled to chew them. I stole the lemon of my hubby's prawns for flavour as I didn't taste any in the mayo. The prawns although tasteful and would keep the vampires away where swimming in butter. The Goujons where nice however. For mains we ordered pie of the day, we were informed was steak and ale, Gammon with egg and pinapple and a side order of scampi and the pork belly with sautéed potato. Unfortunately the pork belly had string baked into it, the steamed veg was tasteless and the sautéed potato looked like mash that accidently burned to the bottom of the pot, the new potatos that where also on the plate where almost raw. (I was offered a replacement meal/dessert and declined as it put me off but they comped the meal and gave me a complimentary drink so thank you) I will also add the pork I ate before realising was tender and succulent. The steak and ale pie of the day wasn't steak and ale, hubby ate the pie lid, I tried the white meet and compared it to other photos in the reviews it wasn't chicken and mushroom.... I want to say it was turkey but it could be over cooked chicken I suppose..... re the gammon, egg was overcooked a little but that was nothing compared to the leather it was hiding, the saving grace was the side order of scampi l, It much appreciated they gave us more chips to accompany the food but again although crispy on the outside needed cooking thoroughly on the inside (a par boil would have fixed this due to their size). Bar staff as always where friendly and welcoming its just a shame its taken us over seven years to eat here to be...
Read moreCame here for a vegetarian sunday roast. I'd advise them not to advertise it as such if potatoes are cooked in beef fat. I also resent paying the same price for a vegetarian roast (with nut loaf) as a roast with meat, because that doesn't make any sense.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Portions were decently sized. Decor is strange - the kind of soft, fabric covered chairs you get at weddings. Beer selection is poor and would benefit from some expansion with local choices. Guinness wasn't bad but served while still settling and overflowed the glass. I have high Guinness standards.
Food was overcooked, tasteless, grey, and cooked with absolutely no love. Very sloppy with a homogenous texture and taste. Roast potatoes were smooth, greasy, and unpleasant. Apparently some people like it this way, but I thought it was insultingly mediocre. Not bad enough to be disgusting, but in no way good. Dessert wasn't bad.
There's no way I'll go back, but if you have incredibly low standards for food then I'm...
Read moreVery disappointed. We were not told that it was a very limited xmas menu with no other choices. I pointed out they said vegetarian options ...yes salmon. My pate arrived with one small lettuce leaf and half a tiny cherry tomato. Yes a mere half. I also had 2 tiny circles of bread accompanying it.My friend had a prawn cocktail I saw the other half of my tomato in her dish underneath the stale looking prawn cocktail. It looked as if it was prepared hours ago and had a dried layer on the sauce. Our Salmon mains were dry and chewy. Cauliflower cheese looked as if it had been put in liquidiser.Did not look at all appetising and tasted awful. We did not risk a sweet. Altogether a very disappointing meal. I don't really like leaving such scathing reviews but money is scarce and a meal out should be nice not a complete waste of money and...
