After reading trip advisor was reluctant to meet this grouchy little man that was talked about... and dreadful gardens... reality... 1st impressions of outside WOW what a gorgeous well kept immaculately clean place.. gardens totally stunning and the best gardens I've ever seen in a pub... walking inside I immediately spotted the grouch from description... reality he was busy but very welcoming and came across as a busy guy but more than happy to help... inside was a pleasant surprise.. very spacious and plenty of seating, clean and quirky... now the best part food... I ordered the special which was half a roast chicken with a thick full size of bacon on top and homemade stuffing served with all fresh veg and chips and gravy oh and cranberry sauce... food quality was excellent my husband had steak burger which was a huge tower... kids meals offer plenty of choice.. desserts were amazingly good too... quantity was plentiful, price... in my opinion for what u get.. it's too cheap.. but I'm happy with that. Sometimes cheap doesn't mean rubbish.... especially not in this case. We have recently been back for Sunday lunch and again impressed with food service and cleanliness... now one of our favourites, and we are more than happy to travel to go there.

Staying a my a lovely cottage near by . Googled for Sunday lunch and after reading the reviews decided to give the Eagle and child a go. It did not disappoint it was a beautiful pub the atmosphere was great and so was the food. During my time there I suffer with anxiety and it stops me from eating when I feel anxious although I felt so chilled there I had had a terrible morning with anxiety I couldn’t eat my Sunday lunch, one of the staff had noticed and came over to ask was everything ok, I explained my situation and she was so understanding and boxed my food up. My partner had the lamb roast he said it was amazing and I had the chicken, although I didn’t eat it at the roast I was able to eat it when I got home it was beautiful would highly recommended for food and drinks. 🥰

Visited with a family friend, table booked for 1pm but arrived early, no problem shown to our allocated table which we could have changed if we so desired, drinks request taken upon entering and extensive menu handed to us, menus available via their website, food served i would say cooked to order, we only went for the main meal, neither of us wanted starters or desert, I had coffee whilst my partner had a smoke in the outside smoking area, toilets also used and in both instances very clean with full facilities. Car parking no problem although it was a midweek afternoon. All in all a first class restaurant worthy of another visit with the staff being attentive and efficient.

Folks Tried to send the comments below directly to the Eagle & Child to allow them to action these rather than for me to publish them for everyone to see. However, they insist you use their 'contact form' on their website which doesn't work! It keeps saying the code you have to enter is invalid. No matter, such a poor standard just confirms what we thought of the place as you can see from my comments below:

Sirs, On Tuesday last I was part of a walking party which had lunch at your pub. This had been previously arranged (including pre-ordering of our individual food orders) and yet, what had been a very good day up till then rapidly started to go downhill upon arrival at your pub. Some of the problems I list as follows:

  1. We had arrived by 1:30 pm approx but it was 2:50 before the first starters were brought out - given that all orders were known about how come the 1hr 20min wait?
  2. I hadn't ordered a starter so it was 15:30 before my main course arrived and I got something to eat.
  3. My wife had ordered a haddock fishcake starter and a salmon maincourse. Without anyone telling her you changed her starter to a salmon fishcake so she had salmon for both course - something she did not enjoy.
  4. Three persons on our table had 'monster cod' - in two cases in was undercooked and the other portion seemed to contain little or no cod just a whole lot of batter. Please note that subsequent to this two of the persons who had the cod suffered from upset stomachs over the following 24 hours. I cannot confirm it was directly as a result but it is definately suspicious. I cannot speak for all persons on the walk, but given the comments heard the table I was on (and an adjacent table) few if any of them will bother with coming to the pub again after such a poor meal...

First of all we went due to the amount of people we know saying it was wonderful food and atmosphere, re the whole of the area, absolutely beautiful, relaxing and really quaint. However the food didn't taste as my wife expected it to, based on the hype, my wife had the beef and it was a bit bland, the veg and everything else spot on, she has had better at other places, I had the scampi, but in all honesty scampi is scampi and I did enjoy it so can't say it wasn't right, it was. Maybe it was a dodgy day for the chef, and truthfully, we will go back but more for the ambience and atmosphere. Try it by all means. I'm not asking for people not to go, after all 90% of the tables are reserved so maybe my wife and I have lost a bit of our tastebuds. Go and enjoy, I'd still...
